Recently quit smoking waking w noc asthma attacks-coughing up clear bubbly phlegm-otherwise young healthy active female. COPD? Cause for alarm?
Unlikely: COPD takes years to develop so this is probably not that. This is probably combination of allergies and poorly controlled asthma. Cause is ALLERGY! If there is no inflammation from infection (yellowish/green sputum) then you most likely have an allergic tracheobronchitis (a "relative" of asthma) An anti-histamine containing expectorant might help (eg: Phenergan (promethazine) Excpectorant) Check with your PCP (Primary Care Provider)

Clarify...: Do you mean you can feel air pockets under your skin on your chest? Does the skin on your chest feel kind of like bubble wrap that you can pop? If so, you need to go to the ER for evaluation ASAP! If this description is right, that is called subcutaneous emphysema and the cause of this needs to be diagnosed. It can be: Physicians are getting away from focusing on the color of phlegm although sometimes it can be helpful.
