Claritin Vs Benadryl Allergic Reaction
Identify & medicate: With any allergic reaction, it's important to identify the trigger and avoid. Other antihistamines can be tried and these include claritin, clarinex, allegra, zyrtec and xyzal (levocetirizine). Under the direction of a physician, higher doses may be needed. If the reaction is severe, seek care, as oral steroids may be necessary. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Can Benadryl (diphenhydramine) help a swelling and hive reaction (itching) allergic reaction to penicillin?
Depends: on the reaction, if just hives and itching, yes benadryl (diphenhydramine) can control it in the right dosage, after discontinuing the offending drug, but if more severe symptoms/swelling you need medical attention with the possible addition of epinephrine and probably steroids, ...Read more
depends on product: For children over 12 years old, the usual dose for Claritin and zyrtec is 10 mg a day, for xyzal (levocetirizine) and Clarinex 5 mg a day, while the dose for Allegra is 180 mg once a day or 60 mg twice a day. Pediatric doses are based on age rather than weight. There are dose adjustments for liver and kidney disease. ...Read more
Post-nasal drips?: If the cough is from post-nasal drips , then I prefer using cetirizine or fexofenadine. A better option would be a nasal steroid. However if the cough is from a sinus infection, you may then need an antibiotic; from asthma, you will need asthma medications. Best to see a doctor. ...Read more
Is it okay to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with aller tec (by kirklands) for an allergic reaction?
Not necessary: Allertec contains Cetirizine (zyrtec) which is a very good new generation antihistamine. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an older antihistamine that doesn't last as long and has more side effects. Likely the main issue with using both together at usual doses would be drowsiness, fatigue and delayed reaction time. ...Read more

Fish allergies: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) could work but with fish and shell fish allergies if it is bad best thing is to avoid eatiing it. I had an allergic reaction to makeup. My eyes are red swollen and itchy. I have both benadryl (diphenhydramine) and claritin, which would be better to take?
Contact dermatitis: Sounds like you are suffering from allergic contact dermatitis from makeup product. Talk with your doctor and consider scheduling patch testing with an allergist to determine your sensitivities so you can avoid this reaction in the future. ...Read more
I have food allergies and if i take benadryl and claritin every day i find i can eat what i want without reacting, is this normal and do others do tha?
Better avoid: any food (s) that induce symptoms, but you need to define the symptoms, are they itching, rash, hives, shortness of breath that occur within minutes, or maximum hours after ingestion, or otherwise, so you need to keep a food diary. Simply taking an antihistamine and eating what you want may mask the initial warning symptoms. If in doubt, see an allergist, check aaaai.org or acaai.org 4 an allergist ...Read more
Is it safe to take children's benedryl and Claritin (loratadine) together for an allergic reaction?
Yes.: Sometimes you need a little more medication. I usually have my patients stick with the same antihistamine rather than take two different ones. I also prefer fexofenadine (allegra) & loratidine (claritin) to the others because they don't cause sedation or slow reaction time & because they last for 12-24 hours. Also i always recommend the generics over brand name. ...Read more

I took Claritin 24 hours, 12 hours ago but my allergies are out of control again. Can I take half a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help with my itchiness?
Yes: Adding Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is fine. If your allergies are out of control you might want to consider adding medicated nasal sprays to your treatment regimen. Consider seeing an Allergist so that you can get better relief. Skin testing to determine sensitivities to indoor and outdoor allergens is useful. If you fail both medications and avoidance measures you might want to consider allergy shots. ...Read more
Is it ok to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to treat my allergies? I've tried zyrtec and Claritin but they don't work.
Most likely: If you're sure you have allergies (presumably you're referring to pollen, etc) and aren't allergic to any of the ingredients in brand name Benadryl or generic diphenhydramine, then sure, it's worth a try. But beware that Diphenhydramine may cause drowsiness & sleepiness as well as dry eyes, dry mouth, urinary retention & constipation. It's used in some otc to help induce sleep. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is it safe to give my 16 month old(who weighs 19lbs) children's Claritin instead of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergies?
Currently taking Claritin and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergies. Would it be safe to instead take clairtin and chlorpheniramine? Should be temporary.
If necessary: All the medications mentioned are antihistamines. Claritin (loratadine) is a new generation one and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and chlorpheniramine are first generation ones. While short term use likely has no serious side effects, there should be a treatment that doesn't require both. Also, the reason for the symptoms should be addressed in an effort to prevent symptoms. ...Read more
My 8 year old son is having seasonal allergies. I am giving him childrens Claritin but was wondering if he can also have childrens Benadryl (diphenhydramine) ?
Other better options: Even certain "non-sedating" antihistamines like zyrtec have been found to impair short term memory and have negative effects on school performance. Rather than increase the likelihood of your 8 year old son having side effects, consider adding a topical nasal steroid spray like Flonase or a complimentary medication like singulair (montelukast). Alternatively, consider allergy testing to identify the triggers. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I have real bad allergies threw the season change. Claritin doesn't work, I do not like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) because it makes me pass out. I need help ASAP.
Guessing game: You're in good company with 1-2 GAZILLION other allergy sufferers who've no good allergy meds to use during HIGH TIDE. My son's even one. I suggest not to play guessing games or allow others to do the same- especially long distance. See an allergist who can do some objective testing & TARGET a treatment(s). Can allergies make you swell up and retain water? I notice when i take Claritin it lasts longer than Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and im not retaining fluids as much
Unexpected: If you mean swelling which lasts hours at a time, it is not from water retention and is called angioedema. Water retention tends to be most noticeable at the legs and ankles and would dent if you press your finger against the area. Claritin does not relieve water retention but may reduce angioedema and yes it has a longer duration of action than benadryl (diphenhydramine). ...Read more
I took claritin an 1.5 hours ago. Can't sleep and it didn't help. Can I take benadryl (diphenhydramine)? I have severe seasonal allergies.
What can I do about my daughter's (4 y/o) constant nose scratching/digging due to allergies? Is it good to give her benadryl/claritin etc everyday?
Preschooler allergy: Your second question first - no it's not good to give Benadryl (diphenhydramine) multiple times a day, which would be needed to control allergies. Claritin is ok with the guidance of pediatrician or allergist. But it sounds like these are not controlling symptoms. There are other medications, both oral, and most appropriately for her condition, nasal steroid mist. Take time to see allergist and work up a plan! ...Read more
I take flonase and allergra for seasonal allergies, and that usually controls it. Today it is not. Can I take allegra, claritin, or benadryl?
Allergy treatment: If taking Allegra already you should not double up on a long acting antihistamine (Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec). This can cause heart issues. Intra-nasal steroids (Flonase) should be used routinely. Adding Allegra is fine on an-needed basis. Adding short acting (Benadryl) is ok but indicates need for better preventive care (environmental controls, more consistent Flonase use, allergy shots). ...Read more
