How is her diet?: U r absolutely right about the new controversy regarding calcium supplements and cardiac risk, but it does not say anything about calcium in diet/foods. So, consuming calcium rich foods will reduce need to take supplement. Also, vitamin use can improve absorption of calcium. Vitamin D: The recommended amount of vitamin D per day is 1000unit (if your vitamin D level is normal), now the food you eat have vit D too so count the amount of bit D you take from ur food roughly and take the rest in form of a supplement, so if you are taking more than 1000-2000 unit a day you could develop toxicity.
