Are potential extrapyramidal effects, induced by Citalopram, reversible? Is Citalopram any less dangerous in this regard than Aripiprazole?

Citalopram/Dystonia: Dystonia: a syndrome of involuntary, repetitive muscle contractions of opposing muscles, which may result in torsion and abnormal postures. Citalopram is a rare potential trigger of acute dystonia. Aripiprazole is more likely than citalopram to trigger dystonia and other extrapyramidal effects. Is it ok to take Abilify (aripiprazole) by itself without another antidepressant to go with it? I already take it with Citalopram, but wish to drop citalopram. Thx!

Yes, BUT: It is very important that you find a provider to moniter your reaction to dropping it. There can be bad w/drawal symptoms for some and you don't want to go through it w/out support. So ask for help in doing what you want to do. I hope it goes well for you - Also, consider some targeted sessions in therapy to help you over the hump. I admire your courage. ...Read more

Meds with food: Some of the meds you take may cause stomach upset, so it's good to take them with food. Some other ideas for reflux are to elevate the head of your bed slightly, not eat near bedtime, limit alcohol or NSAID use and consider a trial of a h2 blocker like ranitidine. If these do not help then consult with your practitioner for other causes like peptic ulcer or h.Pylori infection. ...Read more

How long do celexa and Abilify (aripiprazole) take to start working?

Depends: 6-week studies showed that adding Abilify (aripiprazole) to an antidepressant could improve symptoms of depression in as little as 1 to 2 weeks (versus an antidepressant alone). It will depend on how adequate are the doses of the antidepressant and abilify (aripiprazole). If it does not seem to be working to improve depression after 6 weeks then consult your prescriber. It takes time. I hope you experience a good outcome. ...Read more

Do I take celexa (citalopram) and abilfy in the morning or at night?

That depends: Abilify (aripiprazole) can help with sleep so is often taken at night. However if a person is manic or hypomanic they may be given am dose to slow them down during the day. Celexa can be given at any time of day. Occassionally it can cause insomnia - in that situation it would be better in am. Please discuss with your prescribing physician. Take care. ...Read more

Why does Abilify (aripiprazole) and celexa help my mood but Zoloft made me feel sick and down. I also can't use Abilify (aripiprazole) anymore because of cost. Any other options?

Taking celexa 40 mg for 12 years. Depression and anxiety seemed to come back. My np wants me to try adding abilify (aripiprazole). I am hesitant, is it a good combo?

Depression ; anxiety: I would only use Abilify (aripiprazole) as a last resort. There are many other drugs to try before adding this drug. Although Abilify (aripiprazole) is a good adjunct to mood stabilizing meds it has a host of side effects that would make me not use it until I had exhausted more typical meds for depression and anxiety. Might be worth talking with a physician rather than a np at this time I n your course of treatment. ...Read more

Have tried pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) wellbutrin, paxil, celexa, effexor, lexapro, etc. With lithium, haliperidol &abilify. A couple improve mood. Still anxious! Thoughts?

Many meds: You've tried many meds already, although there are some you haven't mentioned that often help anxiety: buspirone, beta-blockers, other mood stabilizers besides lithium, etc. But after a person has tried so many medications and still has symptoms, i'd suggest non-medication approaches: psychotherapy, mindfulness, relaxation training, exercise/yoga, etc. ...Read more

I've been struggling w/depression for a yr, trying lexapro, celexa, now Prozac 40 & Abilify (aripiprazole) 5.... I'm have bad heartburn again. Is Adderall an option?

Only SSRI: You really only tried one class of antidepressants: SSRI and most recently Abilify (aripiprazole). Your heartburn can be due to lap band and SSRI side effects. Try other class of antidepressants eg NRI, dual acting SNRI, TCA, MAOI or other mood stabilizer eg lamictal. Adderall is not great for depression as people who don't have ADD get tolerant to its antidepressant effects. Emsam patch might an option. ...Read more

My fiancee has a history of depression and is on celexa, zoloft, Abilify and stratera. He sleeps too much, is always tired, has trouble focusing or remembering, has almost no sexual desire, can't get an erection without cialis, and can't reach orgasm wit

I missed 4 doses of celexa (citalopram). Am I ok?

Are you ok?: By missing 4 doses, that typically mean you did not take it for 4 days. How do you feel? If this the beginning of treatment this will affect you more than if you have been taking the Celexa (citalopram) for quite a while. I would guess 4 days is about as many as you can miss and not notice much difference; after that I would bet you might not feel so ok any more. Best to take every day! ...Read more
