Need more info: Stage 3 = bridging fibrosis (scarring of the liver) which is the stage before cirrhosis = stage 4, so stage 3 is not cirrhosis, however you could have had complications like fluid build up (ascites), confusion (hepatic encephalopathy), vomiting blood (esophageal varices) that might make your "stage 3" an underestimate (meaning you might be close to stage 4). Impossible to say: If you have stage 3 fibrosis in the new transplanted liver, that is certainly of concern. The lack of bridging (a precursor to cirrhosis) is encouraging. Hoping so!: I'm going to assume that alcohol is the sole cause, and that he's been checked for hemochromatosis, Wilson's, and hepatitis B and C. If he does choose to stop drinking, having a loving and forgiving wife will be the most wonderful support he can have. Cirrhosis does regress some on achieving sobriety.
