Was told that CIPRofloxacin should not be taken with iron/calcium products. Does this only apply to supplements or whole foods too (e.g. veg/meat)?

No worries: This is a theoretical concern only; the actual effect of iron or calcium on ciprofloxacin absorption is small. You should avoid taking a large dose of antacid (or iron pills) simultaneously with cipro. Otherwise don't worry about it. Certainly the calcium or iron in foods has no signficant effect. ...Read more

Cations: Any cations (calcium, zink, etc) will bind to ciprofloxaxin and therebye inhibit absorption. Therefore, you should wait at least two hours between the time you swallow ciprofloxaxin and any cations. It does not matter the order; just keep them two hours apart. ...Read more

Quinolones & Calcium: Oral intake of calcium salts may interfere with proper absorption of orally administered quinolone antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin (cipro). A 4-hour separation window between the two should be sufficient to prevent an interaction between the two. ...Read more

What to do if I am taking cipro (ciprofloxacin) 500mg and it says not to take antacids, iron or vitamins, do you think its okay to take nght time sleep aid with this medication?

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) & sleep aid?: Well, it says no antacids, iron, or vitamins. While you don't specify which sleep aid you take, it's unlikely to contain antacids, iron, or vitamins. To be certain, however, check the label of your sleep aid & obtain the name or active ingredient & ring ur pharmacist and/or MD. What is most likely to occur when a calcium supplement and an iron supplement are taken simultaneously?

Decrease absorption: In low dose, nothing probably will happen. Calcium and iron are taken together in a multivitamin all the time. At higher dose, you might get GI upset. Regarding efficacy, you get less iron absorption if taken with calcium. It is recommended to take iron 2 hr before or 4 hr after calcium supplementation. ...Read more

If I'm taking biotin, iron, calcium & acidillophus vitamins at the same time, is it effective & are there certain times to take each?

If I'm taking biotin, iron, calcium & acidillophus vitamins at the same time, is it effective & are there certain times to take each?

OK together but...: Minerals are best absorbed on an empty stomach as adequate stomach acid helps & our stomachs have the most acid when empty. However, stomach acid kills acidophilus, so it's far better to take it after a meal (for some strange reason many probiotic labels say take on empty stomach- they're wrong!). Biotin can be taken any time. Taking vit c with iron improves absorption. Consider vit. D in winter. ...Read more

My hb is 11.9 and I had breathing trouble and leg pain. Aftr taking iron tab and calcium tonic for 2 years, still hb is 11.9.why hb didn't increase?

Near normal: Normal Hb for a woman is 12.0, so 11.9 is within the measuring error and you should not be concerned about it. You may wish to keep taking iron as you lose some each month with your periods.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. If I eat many vitamins, iron and calcium but I don't excersise, what happen with all it?

Some used: Fat soluble vitamins (adek) are stored in your body. Water soluble vitamins are used and excesses are lost during excretion (generally via urine). Minerals like calcium may be lost in urine or deposited into bone. Iron is generally used, excreted, or occassionally stored. Unless anemic, most males do not need supplemental iron. Exercise is important and is separate from diet or supplements. ...Read more

For 55+ female, does high VitD & calcium dosage directly or indirectly intervene with Iron absorption from food?

Calcium and iron: Calcium supplements can interfere with iron absorption from the diet. Normally, this is insignificant and usually does not cause iron deficiency. If someone is found to be iron deficient, the first step is to rule out loss of iron in the form of obscure bleeding from the digestive tract. It is vitally important to rule this out first. Good luck. ...Read more

Doctors and vitamins: I hope you understand that the various vitamin products on the market are something that most physicians would not have any expertise in. There are vitamin standards set by the government and daily recommended doses. These are all well displayed on the vitamin products available.
