I have this chronic throat clearing problem for a little over a year now. It started after a bad cold, and won't go away. Please give advice.
I have chronic throat-clearing. It happens throughout the day but worsens after I eat- doesn't matter what I eat. How do I get rid of this/what is it?
If progressive...: Exposure of the vocal cords to stomach acid & pepsin will result in inflammation of the vocal cords (as is also often seen with acid regurgitation). Acute laryngitis may result, but watch out for chronic hoarseness, throat clearing, airway spasms, bronchitis, an asthma-type presentation, and even a higher risk of throat cancer. Impedance pH testing with a symptom diary can best characterize this. ...Read more

I have had chronic throat clearing for several months. Larynoscopy, endoscopy, barium swallow all negative. Nexium, (esomeprazole) nasacort didn't help. Any ideas?
Habit: Since it developed over the last few months my first thought would be a post nasal drip possibly caused by allergies. However, if the nasacort (triamcinolone) has not helped and tests have ruled out the other possiblities, it may just be a habit that you developed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Sinuses: Seems to be you have allergies causes you sinuses to be inflammed. You also seem to have post nasal drip causing you to clear your throat very often. I suggest cleaning your nostrils and paths with saline spray ( no additives added) and cleanse at lest 3x a day for 2 days then once daily. see if that helps. If it persists, see your primary doctor. Yes.: Post Viral Vagal Neuropathy and Laryngeal Sensory Neuropathy can cause your symptoms. These terms are often used interchangeably. The condition is often multifactorial and needs to be approached and treated by several modalities at the same time. Several: The smoking is an irritant. It can increase secretions. It can cause acid reflux. It can cause swelling of the throat and lymph nodes around it. It stimulates the gag reflex. It took me years to stop. Be kind. Patches seem to work since they don't jerk your nicotine level up and down. Keep using them for 2+ months.
