Fibrocystic changes: Swelling below the areoal is ususally from benign causes. Inflammatory breast carcinoma is a lesion of the subcutaneous lymphatics of breast infiltrated with Ca. The breast becomes swollen and erytenatous with the edges of the lesion elevated. A 3D mammo or MRI of breast can resolve the issue. What does doc say?: A swollen, painful node in the armpit may be a "reactive node," meaning a lymph node that swells in response a scratch on your arm, a hangnail, etc. - basically any entry of bacteria. Since you've had an ultrasound, I'm guessing they're recommended you either biopsy now - or watch for a very short time and biopsy if it doesn't go away.
