Chronic Swollen Finger Joint Treatment
It depends: First, your doctor needs to diagnose what is causing the swelling. There can be many causes and each one requires a different treatment. If it is caused by arthritis, anti-inflammants may be prescribed. If it is an infection, antibiotics. If it is from trauma; rest. You get the picture. Get a diagnosis first and then the treatment is prescribed.
Teen with finger/finger joint swelling but no trauma happened. What could it be, and what treatment?
It depends.: There many different causes of atraumatic finger swelling. The amount of swelling and duration would help narrow the possibilities. If swelling is significant and doesn't resolve in a reasonable period of time then it becomes very important to seek further medical evaluation. I have a swollen little finger joint (the top one). There is no pain but there is a little pain on tapping it. I had no injuries there.
Arthritis: (osteo) typically occurs in this joint and it doesn't have to hurt. I wouldn't take or do anything about it, but don't aggravate it by tapping.

Index finger: You have dislocated the finger or broken it. An xray is a great start. Till then buddy tape the finger
Palm Lumps may: Be dupuytren's disease. A common genetic disorder that can present in a variety of ways. Swollen finger knucles can be a part of this known as garrod's knuckles. Multiple causes: Cracking your knuckles usually does not cause any swelling. Swelling can be from fluid retention from certain diets and medications. Swelling in for your joints could also represent inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or another inflammatory arthritic condition. Some thoughts: Paronychia- or an infected cuticle is most likely- without seeing you or taking a history. Try warm soaks, and see your doctor. They can be extremely painful and sometime warrant antibiotics if that is what you have.

A sliver goes in -: -smoothly, but has rough edges, & when pulled out, there can B a wood fragment left behind. Even if not, U probably have an infection from the contaminated wood. Best 2 C a fellowship trained hand surgeon. A small residual fragment is hare 2 C on imaging. Many times it just has 2B explored, & hope it is all removed. During a short hand fellowship we had people returning 4more wood removal. Good L

Dupuytrens can: Have lumps on the palm with swollen knuckles that get stiff, the lumps and swollen knuckles often involve the skin too in one continuous mass of tissue. Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout can also be associated wot bumps and swollen joints. Rheum arthitis feels soft and "boggy" while gouty noodles or so called tophi are hard
