Sinus pain/pressure: The openings for drainage from the sinuses r quite small (see image). Inflammation from infxn or allergies can further reduce size of these passages or even block them completely. No short-breadth!: Chronic sinusitis can cause post nasal drip and irritation of throat, and a feeling of something in the throat. When I see patients with "chronic sinusitis, " I will treat them with a minimum of three weeks of antibiotics (augmentin), oral steroids (medrol dose pak), and nasal steroids (nasonex). Triggers?: It depends on what your triggers are for your allergies/sinus problems. If they environmental things like smog, la may not be a good choice. If cold, dry weather is your nemesis, la would be a great choice. Not enough people find out what causes their symptoms and use avoidance. What is good stuff?: The treatment of chronic sinusitis is generally nasal antiinflammatory sprays, allergy meds if called for, corticosteroid medications and antibiotics. If none of those work, a ct sinus is obtained. If there is a narrowing of the sinus passageways they can be opened minimally invasively as an in office procedure. Polyps need surgical treatment.
