I need to know if there is a cure for chronic myeloid leukemia (cml)?

I need to know if there is a cure for chronic myeloid leukemia (cml)?

Yes : CML used to be bad, 50% dead in 5 years. Today treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors results in 95% of patients being alive 5 years after diagnosis. So far, treatment with tkis does not seem to permanently eliminate the leukemia, requiring continued rx. A smaller proportion of patients who fail tki rx can get transplants and be truly cured, but at the risk of complications. See a good hem/onc! ...Read more

Can you die from chronic myeloid leukemia if it is only in it's first stages?

Possible but unlikel: There have been excellent therapies for this disease with Gleevec (imatinib) and newer drugs. The data is suggesting that for many patients their survival can be close to the normal population. The drugs make the disease behave. There are a small percentage who do not respond well. Your doctor can give you precise info on your situation and how you will know that you are responding well to treatment. ...Read more

What occurs after a bone marrow transplant is needed for chronic myeloid leukemia?

Hopefully cure: CML is a major success story. About 30 years ago up until about 2000, the standard for cure was allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Now, new drugs can achieve long term remissions of a decade or more. This is the new standard of care but despite this, when these drugs fail, bone marrow transplant is still the gold standard and still the only curative therapy. There are many complications. ...Read more
