Chronic Middle Ear Fluid In Children
I have middle ear fluid, chronic tinnitus, hearing difficulties, ear fullness and severe balance issues. Would myringotomy tubes or hearing aids help?
Inner ear involvment: Middle ear fluid is the result of a negative pressure int the middle ear space secondary to obstruction of the eustachian tube (tube that connects back of nose to middle ear). 2 reasons for equilibrium involvement. 5yo had middle ear fluid & adenoid hypertrophy, was on Singulair (montelukast) 1 daily x3 months after which she developed sleepmyoclonus; can singulair (montelukast) b the cause?
Not likely: No Singulair (montelukast) is not likely 2 cause sleep myoclonus. The other conditions you mention are common in young children, middle ear fluid and adenoidal hypertrophy. Benign sleep myoclonus is also common, and unrelated to the former conditions. As long as your child's development is normal and the nature of the movement does not change, this is a variant of normal and needs no further investigation ...Read more
ENT #: Can daily post nasal drip (doctor not seen yet) caused by continued air conditioned environment ever result in middle ear fluid build up?
Isn't there: Those with inner ear issues do not by their diagnosis, need any middle fluid to be present. Someone with inner ear disease can have incidental middle ear fluid and that may be visible. ...Read more
Can fluid get in inner ears like it can in middle ear? If so, how does dr diagnose inner ear fluid.
Middle vs inner?: Not sure what you mean here. The ear canal is open to the outside, so every time you bath, shower, swim, are in the rain, etc, fluid can enter the ear canal. The tympanic membrane[tm]) ear drum, stops any fluid from getting into the inner ear (which some people may call the middle ear). Using an otoscope, a dr. Can tell with reasonable certainty if "fluid" is behind the tm, and decide any tx needs. ...Read more

Nope: There is no medicine to "clear up" middle ear fluid. Decongestants and antihistamines have been studied and do not speed the resolution of middle ear fluid after a cold. This should clear up within a month or two on its own. ...Read more
What type of fluid.: If the fluid is serous (clear), perhaps you have a serous otitis media, which may be caused by allergy; if this is the case, an antihistamine may help. If the fluid is pus (opaque), an antibiotic should clear it up and usually drainage is not required. If it is blood, it may be from trauma; if bloody, this may need further work-up by your physician. Get it checked out; prob won't need surgery. ...Read more
Not likely: It is virtually impossible to demonstrate fluid in the eustachian tube clinically or even radiologically. Eustachian tube obstruction leads to negative pressure in the middle ear and eventually fluid in the middle ear space. If the ear drum on inspection is considered to be normal, then it is highly unlikely to have eustachian tube obstruction. ...Read more
Are there really definitive tests that show an inner ear fluid buildup that may result in dizziness as a main physical symtom?
Some: Tympanometry testing can tell if there is fluid in the middle ear, which can cause dizziness. The inner ear, however, is a little more involved to test as there are a number of tests to do to fully assess the inner ear as it is nearly impossible to access. There are different hearing and nerve tests that can be done, but I'm not sure one could definitively tell you there's fluid in the inner ear. ...Read more

Why would ears feel kinda stuffy n pressure I went to dr they looked in ears said they looked good no fluid even done middle ear test tympometry? Anx
Eustacean Tube Dysfn: Sometimes one can have this stuffy feeling and pressure in the ears without having fluid or an active infection. The eustacean tube leading from the throat to the middle ear can get " plugged" up so to speak, with allergies or a cold, and gives this full sensation. You can relieve the pressure by yawning or blowing your nose. The cold will resolve on its own, but allergies need to be treated! ...Read more
