Chronic Diarrhea In A 12 Year Old Child
My five year old has lost seven pounds in the last 3 months due to chronic diarrhea. Is this a dangerous amount of weight for her to have lost?
Significant-yes: The average 5 yo female weighs just above 40 lb and a 7 lb loss over 3 months is significant. It might not be dangerous in the short term, unless paired with unusual fluid losses, but deserves proper evaluation and treatment. Your PCP or pediatrician could start this but referral to a children's specialty center may be needed to track down the problem.

I had a colon resection surgery one year ago diagnosed stage 1 colon cancer. I still have bouts of chronic diarrhea. Is this due to the surgery?
What part gone?: Removing the right colon and valve that separates the small bowel from colon sets the stage for bacterial contamination of the small bowel, which leads to diarrhea commonly-can be treated, with good success. Can try a probiotic, e.g. Florastor, and call your doc. Sometimes antibiotic rx needed to reestablish normal balance. If large amount of bowel removed (any location) can give diarrhea.See 1 more doctor answer
Thank you. The only symptom I have had is chronic diarrhea after I eat for over a year and a slight sore throat. I have not had any fevers or rashes.
See your doctor!: chronic diarrhea can be life-threatening if it continues to the point of dehydration. So go see your doctor and see what can be done, as it may as simple as changing your nutrition. So that your diet doesn't include fried foods, junk food, or processed foods. Your gut may have a hard time digesting this, or may be lactose intolerant, or have food allergies that are making your condition worse.

I have had chronic diarrhea since gall bladder removal almost two years ago. Is this normal? Will it ever stop?
Help available: Very rarely patients develop diarrhea after removal of gall bladder. One of the causes is thought to be alteration in reabsorption of bile salts from the gut. If so, there is a medication you may want to try. It is called cholesteramine. Your doctor needs to prescribe it for you.See 1 more doctor answer
I have a chronic diarrhea for years, I cannot eat anything. Does saccharomyces boulardii can help? I am afraid of leading to cancer. Help?
Chronic diarrhea: Hi, the probiotic can help but make sure that other causes of chronic diarrhea have been ruled out, particularly intestinal infections ; infestations, small bowel inflammatory diseases like crohn's. Immuno-deficiency of various types can present with chronic diarrhea too. If there is wt loss, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, pain while defection, fever, loss of energy see a GI physician.

Gallbladder removed 3 years ago. Still chronic diarrhea with anything I eat or drink even eating healthy don't help. Now hemorrhoids. Any idea?
"Cure" for diarrhea: First define the problem (do you have soft or frequent stool?), circumstances under which diarrhea developed (malabsorption, pancreatic maldigestion, food intolerances, stressful times, exposure to ill individuals, food poisoning, ischemic gut, inflammatory colitis, etc.), severity (stool volume, dehydration, blood, night-time awakening, weight loss), ; duration. The "cure" depends on diagnosis.See 1 more doctor answer

Gallbladder removal 5 and a half years ago. Still having chronic diarrhea. Ulcers for several years, inter hemorr chronic stomach pain. Please help?
Gall bladder: GB usually does not cause diarrhea so must be something else. Let's do 2nd opinion and figure out what is going on.
Get evaluated: Get evaluated to find out why you have it. After getting tested, it may be possible to use anti-diarrhea drugs.
Chronic diarrhea: Chronic diarrhea is decreased stool consistency for >4 weeks. Many causes: nonabsorbable sugars or salts in the gut, too much fat in the stool (malabsorption/ maldigestion), inflammatory bowel disease, infections, poor blood flow to the bowel, medications, laxatives, even cancers. This is a job for a doc. You will need a good pe, stool cultures/chemistries/fat evaluation, crp/esr, ? Colonoscopy.
