I have anemia and gastritis. My B12 level is normal. Could the gastritis alone cause anemia related to blood loss? Thank you.

I have anemia and gastritis. My B12 level is normal. Could the gastritis alone cause anemia related to blood loss? Thank you.

Need more eval: Gastritis means inflammation on the stomach lining. It does not cause anemia- unless if it is not just gastritis but also you have bleeding on the stomach lining or if the gastritis is affecting absorption of certain nutrient like iron for instance. There are many things that can cause anemia besides iron, vit B12 def or bleeding. You definitely should have further evaluation to find the cause. ...Read more

Hello, I have seen very infrequent bleeding with my BM. I think I might have internal hemmroids. BUt I would like to know , how much blood loss anemia?

Hello,

I'm 23 years old and suffer from anemia/heavy blood loss. Does green tea have anything to do with heavy blood loss during periods?

In Traditional: Chinese Medicine - it is recommended that green tea not be consumed during menses. It might be a contributing factor - but I would very much doubt that it is a singular cause for your amount of blood loss. Take care. ...Read more

On Depo-Provera and bleeding for a little over a month and diagnosed with anemia because of blood loss. Any way to regulate bleeding?

More info is needed: The reason for the excess bleeding needs to be established and appropriate treatment needs to be started. Specific questions would be for a mild bleeding disorder, as von willebrand disease, or mild coagulation factor deficiency. Regardless of the cause, iron replacement therapy needs to be considered. Please see your physician. Is there a family history of bleeding disorder? ...Read more

Dr dx'd anemia after labs showed hgb of 7.5, ferritin less than 1, iron 15-can such low levels be from monthly cycle blood loss?

Anemia: If you have heavy menses, they can cause severe iron deficient anemia. Alternative causes should be considered if this not the case; specifically a gastrointestinal source for the bleeding/ versus iron absorption issues. Iron replacement and tight follow up will be recommended. ...Read more

Is a hematologist visit needed for anemia related to blood loss? My gastroenterologist says to take iron pills for 3 months & do more blood tests then

Not necessarily: If your anemia has been determined to be caused by blood loss, there is probably no need to see a hematologist. If the anemia persists despite iron treatment (and preventing further blood loss), then a hematologist consultation might be indicated. ...Read more

Are transfusions for blood loss and iron deficiency anemia the same?

Are transfusions for blood loss and iron deficiency anemia the same?

Transfusion/infusion: Blood ( pack red blood cells) transfusion is usually given in the setting of significant anemia due to blood loss. Intravenous iron infusion is given to treat iron deficiency anemia. However both blood transfusion and iron infusion can be given in anemia due to blood loss and iron deficiency anemia- decision will depend on how severe the anemia/symptoms & how quickly you want to treat the anemia. ...Read more

Dad 70 yrs, non alchoholic. Has macrocytic anemia. Hb 10. Mcv 110. No blood loss. Bone marrow, kidney, liver, vitamins, colonscopy normal. Why anemic?

Dad 70 yrs, non alchoholic. Has macrocytic anemia. Hb 10. Mcv 110. No blood loss. Bone marrow, kidney, liver, vitamins, colonscopy normal. Why anemic?

Ideas: He's not on medications and has normal thyroid, correct? He needs a reticulocyte count to determine whether these cells are big because they're young. I'd be surprised if that was the explanation. Next will perhaps be an offer of a bone marrow tap to look for myelodysplastic syndrome. ...Read more

I had a pericardial window 4 years ago(pericarditis, pericardial effusion/tampenade -1 liter blood ). Could chronic pericarditis cause frequent anemia?

Not exactly: Amy, there are medical conditions that can lead to both a pericarditis and to anemia but pericarditis in and of itself should not cause anemia. I'd recommend checking with the doctors who treated your pericarditis as they likely did some tests to find the root cause before they drained it and performed the window.
