What are bile salts (cholestyramine)?

What are bile salts (cholestyramine)?

Bile binders: These salts bind bile and take it out of your system. They can be helpful in some situations. Cholestyramine also lowers cholesterol indirectly.

I have diarrhea everyday and the dr prescribed prevalite, (cholestyramine) but I am still having accidents where I mess myself, what should I do?

I have diarrhea everyday and the dr prescribed prevalite, (cholestyramine) but I am still having accidents where I mess myself, what should I do?

Diarrhea: Severe diarrhea and incontinence are not likely to be alleviated by Cholestyramine alone without a specific etiology of the GI abnormalities delineated. Go see a gastroenterologist and be fully evaluated. This does not sound like a simple irritable bowel syndrome, but only a full work-up will tell. Hope you are better soon.

I have been on cholestyramine for 10 days to clear arava (leflunomide) from my system. How long will this non-stop itching last?

I have been on cholestyramine for 10 days to clear arava (leflunomide) from my system. How long will this non-stop itching last?

Discontinue: You may be having a histaminic reaction to the cholestyramine. I'd stop the medication or take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to see if the itching improves. Tell the prescribing doctor, they will likely switch you to a different drug.

I take cholestyramine powder for bile salt diarrhea from gall bladder surg. It has worked for many years. ..Not the past 6 mo. Any suggestions?

See a GI doctor: Your current loose stools may or may not be related to bile salts. Just because you are having this does not necessarily mean that the Cholestyramine is not working. Something new may be in progress. Go get seen and hopefully this will clear up soon. Good luck.

Does alcohol cancel out the benefits of cholestyramine?

Does alcohol cancel out the benefits of cholestyramine?

Alcohol: Alcohol has manifold effects on the body's systems. Many of these effects are deleterious. Cholestyramine has limited effects. Taken in significant doses, alcohol's manifold negatives will likely outbalance the limited positives of cholestyramine in an individual.

Is there an over-the-counter alternative for cholestyramine?

Is there an over-the-counter alternative for cholestyramine?

Sort of.: Several otc alternatives to Cholestyramine are touted by various alternative medicine groups. The most popular, as far as I can tell, is a short-chain fatty acid called butyrate, but neither it nor any similar product has been proven safe or effective. I would strongly suggest checking with your doctor before using any such products.

Son had gallbladder out many years ago. He constantly has dumping syndrome still after everything he eats. Tried questran, correct eating. Any advice?

Son had gallbladder out many years ago. He constantly has dumping syndrome still after everything he eats. Tried questran, correct eating. Any advice?

Insufficient info: Dumping syndrome usually occurs after gastric surgery, not gallbladder surgery. Vagal nerve damage is one cause, but your son needs an extensive evaluation by a gastroenterologist. He may not have dumping syndrome. You list his conditions to include vaginal dryness and hot flashes.?

Is cholestyramine or colestipol better drug?

Is cholestyramine or colestipol better drug?

Neither --: They are both as good or as bad -- they are acting locally in the bowel to bind the fat and cholesterol and theoretically reduce the absorption of fat and thus reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Which is better? Cholestyramine or colestipol?

Better lipid med: It depends is the best answer. These are both good meds depending on the type of elevated lipid. Cholestyramine is used to lower triglycerides and other fats by preventing absorption in the intestine, so if you have a high fat diet this may be a better medicine for you.
