Nuts good for HDL: Eating nuts tends to increase HDL (good) cholesterol and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol. The effect is larger if triglycerides are also elevated. Good fat...: Yes...It is a better type of fat...We need fat in our diet, but unfortunately much of what we get is saturated fat--meaning from animal products. Often from nuts/plants, we get monosurated fat, a good thing. This fat is not as dangerous--not causing much damage to your blood vessels etc...So, monosaturated fat is a better fat to get. Low fat diet is recommended, with a leaning towards pony- and mono-unsaturated fats (like fish oil). Same as most animals: The cholesterol content in most animals per unit weight is quite similar. The difference is usually related to their relative content of saturated (like marbled fat in red meat) and polyunsaturated (like omega-3 fats in sea food) that determine their health risks. Abalone likely is very low in saturated fat itself, but like most sea food, gets less healthy with the drawn butter that accompanies it. ...Read more
