Is there anything I can eat (meats wise) to lower bad cholesterol?

Yes: Limit yourself to the number of calories necessary to maintain ideal weight. If you're overweight, limit your calories to lose a pound or two a week. Unless you have an inherited cause for your elevated ldl, you'll lower it with this regimen. Daily exercise will also further lower it. 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day can help raise your good (HDL) cholesterol. ...Read more

Need for assessment: How high is the cholesterol? What risk factors do you have for heart disease? You should discuss having a complete lipid profile, in fasting state, with your doctor. History of high cholesterol (like sibs). Eat light, little meat. Gp stopped Zetia (ezetimibe) and prescribed red yeast. Is that ok for active, sharp 95yo woman?

History of high cholesterol (like sibs). Eat light, little meat. Gp stopped Zetia (ezetimibe) and prescribed red yeast. Is that ok for active, sharp 95yo woman?

My opinion: There is a paucity of data to support taking red yeast although lowering cholesterol is a reported use. The real question is whether a 95 yo woman should be on anything for cholesterol. Imo, if you have hx of heart attack, stent or bypass, it's reasonable to stabilize plaque. If not, I wouldn't use it. (ie there's no indication for primary prevention in this age group). ...Read more

Can you tell me how is cholesterol assessed in chicken meat?

It's not: Much of what you read about diet, cardiovascular health, and cholesterol content of foods is subscience or worse. Cholesterol is a normal component of all animal tissue and you make plenty in your own body. There's no mainstream scientific consensus even today on the "received wisdom" that "saturated fats are bad for you". I'd urge you to eat what you like, sensibly, and stay aerobically fit. ...Read more
