Cholera (Definition)

Cholera is a dangerous intestinal infection that is caused by ingestion of food or water that is contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholerae. Cholera causes so much diarrhea, it has been described as 'rice water stool'. Patients can die from cholera because of the severe dehydration and loss of electrolytes. Small children are at the greatest risk of death because they don't have the same reserve as adults. The disease can treated effectively by replacement of the fluids and salts that are lost. Prevention is possible: clean water, food safety, and sanitation are very important.
