Choledocholithiasis (Overview)

The choledochous means bile duct in latin. Lithiasis is presence of stones. Hence, choledocholitiasis is stones in the bile duct. These stones require treatment usually an endoscopic procedure called ERCP is done for stone extraction followed by gallbaldder removal.

Remove the stones: Common bile duct stones are much more serious than gallstones due to their ability to block the liver and cause infections or pancreatitis. These can be removed non surgically by gastroenterologists (ercp), followed by surgical removal of the gallbladder to prevent any other stones from leaving the gallbladder and entering the bile duct (provided that mom is healthy enough for surgery). ...Read more
