How long till I see full result of genioplasty (hor advc, vert. Augm)? I'm not happy with the advancement 5days post op. Can I still hope for more changes?

So early yet -: Post-op edema takes some time to reduce, intra-oral incision needs time to heal & some bone remodeling needs to occur before you make a final assessment. At this point your whole lower lip, chin & submandibular area are probably swollen which creates distortion for you to be able to truly evaluate. Postop radiographs demonstrate extent of advancement, which can be measure in mm. Ask at your f/u. ...Read more

I had a genioplasty 3 years ago. I hit the underside of my chin with a barbell. It broke the skin and is slightly swollen. Should I be worried?

Likely not: If the chin feels intact without any movement in the area of surgery, you should be fine. Monitor the swelling and keep it clean. Ice for the 1st 24 hours will help. Ibuprofen 4x day for 3-5 days will help with pain and swelling. If it looks infected, see your surgeon. Good Luck. ...Read more

Call surgeon: Your postop care covers 90 days of follow-up care at no additional cost. It's included with your surgeries. So it's best to contact her/him, and find out what you can do to relieve the pain, and swelling, and to feel more comfortable during your healing. You need to find out how long this will last, so that you can have peace of mind, and plan other things you can do now to help it along. ...Read more

What's the difference between a chin implant and a genioplasty?

Genioplasty: Strictly speaking, a chin implant is a prosthesis (i.e. silicon) that is inserted into the chin for purposes of augmentation. A genioplasty is reshaping of the chin by making osteotomies and repositioning the bony chin into a more esthetic position. One of the main differences between a genioplasty vs. A chin implant, is that there is no insertion of a foreign body. ...Read more

Genioplasty and rhinoplasty about 5 weeks ago... I get tension in my nose and some pain, still can't move chin. Lots of tension but of pain. Healing?

Rhinoplasty: It takes at least a year to recover from rhinoplasty. At this point, things may feel a bit stiff as your body lays down collagen in the operated areas. It will soften with time. Discuss your concerns with your surgeon at your next postop visit. ...Read more

Will genioplasty leave major scars on my face? I am considering genioplasty to make my receding chin more prominent, but I'm afraid of having surgery in such an obvious area. Are the incisions made in a hidden area such as under the chin? Are they small e

Genioplasty: Genioplasty is a procedure commonly done from inside the mouth, in which case all incisions are hidden within the oral cavity. Traditionally, there are no incisions made on the face, and therefore no scars on the face either.

Chin implants usually require a small incision hidden on the underside of the chin.

Anesthesia: While I suggest talking with your surgeon about anesthetic options I very much doubt someone would remove bone from your face under local anesthesia. Anesthesia has risks yet you cannot have certain things done to you awake. Best of luck! ...Read more

What types of implant materials are used during genioplasty? I am concerned about the health risks involved in silicone implants used for genioplasty. My chin is not very dominant and this surgery would balance out the look of my face. Are there other opt

There: There are several options when it comes to augmenting the chin area.

Silicone implants are probably the most common. Unlike with breast implants, silicone chin implants are actually solid so there is no risk of rupture or leakage. This type of silicone has a many year history of safe use.

Other common implant materials include gortex, mersilene, and medpore. The type of material used is often based on surgeon preference and experience.

If you are looking for an option that doesn't include a implant you could consider a sliding genioplasty. This involve making a cut in the chin bone, advancing it forward (and/or up or down) and securing it in its new position with a titanium plate. ...Read more

3 months post op genioplasty osteotomy I put my finger across my nose tip and chin to see if they line up but my hand pushed the chin, could it have pushed it backwards?

Very unlikely: Three months post-op, you should have healed to the point that a minor force like you described would have caused a posterior displacement of the chin. I also think that, if you had inadvertently done so, it would have really been painful! ...Read more

Rhinoplasty/genioplasty- please help define?

Nose vs. Chin: Rhinoplasty is surgery of the nose, while genioplasty is surgery of the chin. For example, a person thinking of rhinoplasty for a large nose may also have a small chin. Chin augmentation will not only improve the chin size, it will balance the face and make the nose appear relatively smaller. Rhinoplasty and chin implants are commonly performed at same time. ...Read more

Genioplasty recovery time? When will pain subside, when will I be able to move my face and eat etc

2-4 weeks: Reconvery from genioplasty is usually in the range of 2-4 weeks. Pain usually subsides after several days. Genioplasty is a well proven surgical correction of the chin, but other less invasive techniques are available that may require little to no recovery. Long lasting injectible fillers may be an easier and more cost effective form of treatment. ...Read more

After genioplasty, how long does it generally take the bone to heal? I've read guidelines that differ drastically. Some sources say 2 months but I've also read a year??

HEALTHY BONE: Heals in 6-8 weeks after a FRACTURE but bone surgery may take longer since surgery may involve union of two surgically "CREATED" bone fragments.
Hope this helps
P.S Your surgeon should be able to tell you about the time needed for example if a bone is used for WEIGHT BEARING the recovery time can be 10-12 months!!!!

What is a sliding genioplasty done for?

What is a sliding genioplasty done for?

Pros and cons: A sliding genioplasty and chin implants can accomplish the same end result of improving the profile of a deficient chin area.
The genioplasty is more invasive and involves a permanent restructuring of the anatomy of the lower jaw.
Chin implants are less invasive and may be easier to achieve the desired end contours needed.
Consulting a surgeon re: pros and cons of each is recommended. ...Read more
