Childs Tylenol Cough Medication
I drink pretty regularly, haven't had a drink in two days. I just took some Tylenol (acetaminophen) cough medicine should I be concerned ?
Yes: You should always be concerned when you take any medication that is potentially toxic to your liver when you drink regularly. However, it always amazes me that regular drinkers aren't concerned nearly as much about the constant impact the alcohol has on their liver. It is fairly rare for Tylenol (acetaminophen) to cause liver failure, pretty common for alcohol to do so with or without tylenol (acetaminophen). ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
If I take Tylenol (acetaminophen) and cough medicine that are 4 hour doses, would I be safe to drink after the 4 hours are up? Or will it still be in my system.
I accidentally took tylenol (acetaminophen) cold and sinus with other cough medicine, now i can't sleep and have difficultly of breathing, what will i do?
Sinus med and insomn: Sinus medications can prevent you from sleeping. If you cannot sleep with coffee then you will not sleep with sinus meds (sudafed for example). For decongestant at night use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and use sudafed (or equivalent) only strictly in daytime. If you cough more at night than daytime then you need a brocho-dilator to open your airways to stop coughing. Good doctors do not prescribe cough sirop. ...Read more
Can a 90 lb 7-year-old girl safely take 1 tylenol (acetaminophen) pm (500 mg) and 2tsp of Bromfed cough medicine and not have any complications?
Depends: Just like anyone, there are causes of coughing and the cough is treated the same way. A productive cough is treated with expectorant to help with clearing of secretion, and if with allergy, treated like allergy. Bronchospasms is treated with the inhalers. If there is already co2 retention, be careful with narcotic cough suppressants to avoid severe sedation. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Honey-based: Another choice would be to use one of the honey-based cough medications. A recent study indicated that honey was as effective as many other cough preparations. Because xyrem may cause some respiratory depression, honey-based products should not contribute to any potential adverse effects. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Coridian Hbp is the only cold and cough medication I have in the house right now. Can I give this to my 8 year old?
Yes but...: if it is day and night, you can give the day pill one pill 2-3 times a day. the night pill acetaminophen dose may be too strong, but wont hurt if given once. However, best to avoid these things for kids. I give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever, pain, zyrtec (cetirizine) for runny nose, honey/lemon tea for cough. Rumor has it rubbing vicks on soles of feet then wearing socks helps cough. ...Read more
My 2.5 year old daughter often has a lingering cough 2 weeks after a cold. Can i give her cough medication if yes which one? We just give her honey
OTC Medications:: There are about 400 different 'over the counter' medications for fever, cold, cough. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a fever reducer, somatic pain reliever. Dose: 10-15 mg/kg/dose, 4-6 hours, for fever 101 f or above. Some cold/cough meds contain Acetaminophen also, so there is possibility of overdosing. Many cold meds has Pseudoephedrine which increases heart rate. So, be careful not to overdose! ...Read more
In the lungs nothing: Between the lungs (in the "mediastinum") there is a proliferation of scar tissue that can lead to coonstriction of the large central vessels and airways leading into the lung. I took the cough medication Hycodan (hydrocodone) at around 7pm. Its 10:30pm, would it be ok to take nyquil?
Cough control: Hycodan (hydrocodone) can give excellent relief of cough. Unfortunately, if you are coughing again a lot after 3-4 hours, I would say the Hycodan (hydrocodone) levels are not sufficient to relieve the cough by itself. Hopefully, taking the NyQuil at that point will hopefully give you additive benefit. I would not typically take both meds together. If your cough is increasing/getting worse, see your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

One and a half baby with wet cough and fever giving tylenol (acetaminophen) looking for an over-the-counter medicine he weighs almost 40lbs?
Workup/Mgt: It is important to determine the underlying cause of the wet cough. If he is coughing and vomiting, has a high fever or difficulty breathing, he may need antibiotics. Most respiratory infections at this age are caused by viruses and can be treated with hydration, nasal saline drops with gentle suction to reduce cough caused by post nasal drip. Most colds with wet coughs clear up by day 8. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

1yr10months boy; high temperature, convulsions earlier in the day, ear infection, possibly tonsillitis 2. Mild flu; blocked nose, cough. Medication?
Febrile seizures: If he has an ear infection it is due to the mucus which has backed up from the nose. You can help the problem by using salt water nose drops, a vaporizer, and bulb syringe to such up the mucus. Antibiotics such as Amoxil for the ear infection itself.
