The drugs that can both reduce fevers and lessen pain work by suppressing the body's production of these chemicals. By comparison, opiate pain relievers work via a different mechanism. Brain damage: There are a lot of different types of "pain relievers". The short answer is yes if you end up dead from an overdose. The more subtle cognitive impairment that drugs can cause is worse from benzodiazepines (valium, xanax, (alprazolam) etc.) and alcohol than from opiates.
