Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

I have a child with fever that did not come below 39c after patacetamol, what is the best medication to add. Ibruprofen or mefenamic acid?

Child with fever, heart racing 2 yr old daughter. Rectal fever 105. Third day with fever. During day she plays, seems fine. Been on steady doses of tylenol and motrim. Currently doing cold presses, popsicles. Should we be at er? Her heart rate was at 150.

Since: Since your child's temp is up around 105f, you should either call her doctor or go to the emergency room.

Fevers for the most part aren't dangerous and are just the body's natural reaction to fighting off an infection. Most of these infections are viral and may be accompanied by runny nose, sore throat, congestion, mild rash, or nothing at all. Since fevers aren't dangerous, we usually treat the fever with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen just to make the child more comfortable as their body fights the illness.

"red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are:
-fevers that last 5 days or more
-fevers persistently above 104f orally or 105f rectally
-a child that acts very sick - very irritable or difficult to wake
-difficulty breathing
-vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration
-a purple rash, esp on the legs
-stiff neck
-any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint

as always, use your judgement. If you think that your child is ill, err on the side of caution and call your child's doctor. ...Read more

Supportive measures.: The question is unclear but cough is only of 3 days duration and your child sounds well. Several issues to consider overtime if cough persists are; the nature of the sputum, associated difficulty breathing, are symptoms more at night or with activity, is appetite still suppressed etc.
I will be very glad to follow up with your daughter if cough does not respond to your supportive measures. ...Read more

I think--- it's viral infection leading to acute bronchitis. See your pediatrician. ...Read more

Child with fever and cough. On antibiotics but looking like it's not effective, so maybe change medicine?

Be patient: Most cough/fever in a kid is a cold or some other virus. Treating a cold with antibiotics will not heal it faster or fix a fever that is not caused by bacteria. If the kid was labeled as a bronchitis or some other infection, the antibiotics may or may not have been needed. Unless the kid is going down hill you should give it some time to self heal. ...Read more

Maybe an infection: For previously healthy people, getting a fever is usually a sign of an infection. A cough plus fever can be an infection in the nose, sinuses, throat, bronchi, lungs, etc... Fevers often are noticed as higher in the evenings or bedtime. Some infections are viral and go away by themselves, while others are bacterial or fungal and need prescription antibiotics. A primary care doctor can evaluate. ...Read more

Pls suggest medicines for low grade fever with few symptoms of cold and cough for my 2 yr old child, please note child 's appetite, water intake r normal.?

Common cold: Benadryl liquid is good for both cough and cold in young children. Adjust dosage according to your child's weight per instruction from drug company. Low grade fever can be just monitored without treatment as some scientists believe fever is a natural mechanism for the body to fight infection. High fever should be treated with Motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen) to avoid seizure from overheating of the brain! ...Read more

Cough: Sounds like a viral syndrome. Would treat with symptomatic fixes. Lots of fluids and stay hydrated. Ice blocks are perfect for this. Water, milk, juice, sports drinks are all good. As for the fever it is ok to alternate pamol every 6 hours with ibuprofen every 8 hours. Decongestants and anti-histamines will help with the upper resp symptoms. Rest chicken soups are also good. 2 months old baby had cough and cold and was treated with antibiotics via iv. Baby still has cold for 10 days now with no fever but stuffy noise

Re check!: If your infant is still congested-have your pediatrician evaluate to determine if congestion is from stuffy nose or from the lungs-wheezing-"bronchiolitis" cough. This evaluation will determine what to try for "comfort" care. Often times, the congestion takes 1-2 weeks after your event with IV antibiotics to subside. ...Read more

Treatment failure: Symptoms of an illness that will respond to a particular antibiotic usually start to improve within 3-4 days if the appropriate antibiotic was prescribed, and they were taken as directed. Relapse or persistence of symptoms is generally regarded as a treatment failure or inaccuracy of the original diagnosis (i.e. viral not bacterial). Fever from Strep usually resolves in 2-3 days with antibiotics. ...Read more

Does green nasal discharge and cough without fever mean infection on child?

Not necessarily: Nasal mucous is composed of water, protein and sugar which support bacterial growth. The more time passed, the deeper the color. All mucous exposed to open nasal surfaces are likely to color over time. ...Read more

My child has hives and a persistent cough, no fever, manifested this morning. Any ideas appreciated.

Virus: The most common cause of both hives and cough would be viral infection. New hives can be treated with as needed long acting next generation antihistamine (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine). Be sure to use the appropriate dose. Another potential cause is environmental allergy (in which case antihistamine will also improve cough), but this is less likely to cause the hives. Good luck! ...Read more
