More info: How high is the temperature and how did you take it? How old is the child, are they in day care or otherwise exposed, who else in family is ill. If the fever is less than 104 f, the child is alert and without other symptoms would make them comfortable, keep them well hydrated and wait things out. Not likely: Meningitis can be caused by variety of infectious organisms, especially viruses, but also, bacteria, and fungi. I have almost invariably seen fairly high fevers, significant malaise, nausea, vomiting, confusion, other than immunologically suppressed patients, who early on, seem rather mild. Since flu is prevalent now, we often begin flu treatment without a positive diagnosis- that is based on the symptoms and history.
