Sleep Apnea: About 10% children that age would snore in their sleep, but only 1-3% of snorers have obstructive sleep apnea. My mother has trouble breathing when she's sleeping. She sometimes faints when laughs and randomly gets sleepy.
Mom needs to see doc: There is a neurological disorder called narcolepsy in which people fall asleep inappropriately, and experience sudden loss of mucle tone with emotional arousal such as hearty laughter. That may cause a falling to the ground, but not true fainting (loss of consciousness). Breathing trouble is not part of narcolepsy. My 2 month baby cries with excessive rage and when he stops he gaps while breathing even when he falls asleep for a while. Is this normal or harmful?
Mgt/workup: Please observe her carefully for any changes in lip or skin color. Babies sometimes will gasp after a brief pause, and their respiratory pattern is developing.
