A growth chart is used by pediatricians to follow a child's growth over time. Growth charts have been constructed by observing the growth of large numbers of normal children over time. My 14 year old son's bone age was cited as 2 STD deviations above his chronological age. what does this mean in terms of his growth potential?
Greater than 99%: Your son is greater than the 99% for both height and weight for boys his age. This means that basically nobody (or very few) boys are larger than he is at his age. What's even more important is his body mass index (BMI). Here's a way for you to calculate that at the following link: https://nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/calculator.aspx. 99% tile "obese" ...Read more

My daughter is four. I'm worried about her development. Is autism an inherited trait or a developmental trait based on the child's environment?
Inherited latest: The latest thinking is that genes play a strong role. Much research is ongoing in autism genetics with some great discoveries. If you are concerned about her development, then I'm concerned too! At your daughter's age, she should be able to have a thorough evaluation and reach a diagnosis of developmental disorder, or not. Start with your general pediatrician and seek specialty care if necessary ...Read more
My brother is 15 years old 5'5" and 95kg.Can this weight stunt his growth or affect his height in any way?
his weight on itself: Will likely not stunt his growth, unless of course if he is severely malnourished. He needs to eat a balanced diet, and follow instructions of his physician. Weight management, and weight loss will be very helpful in minimizing the many negative health effects of obesity. (i'm assuming you mean 95 kg, and not pounds). ...Read more
Teen daughter should be growing is 5'2 & weighs 96 lb & doesn't seem to be growing & the scale is staying the same. Can 13 y/o stop growing?
It's not unusual: Girls generally stop growing about a year or two after their first period, generally adding another 1-2 inches. So, if your daughter had her first period more than two years ago, it is normal for her to have pretty much stopped. Another thing to remember is that kids don't grow at a steady rate, but in spurts and stops, so she may be in-between spurts. The height of the parents also plays a role. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My 11 mon old girl has a circumference of only 43cms.she is hitting all her milestones.she is 32 percentile ( weight )& 95(height).shld I b concerned?
Well rounded diet: Height is mostly determined by genetics unless your daughter suffered from some severe illness in her past. Just a well rounded diet is best for now. There is no miracle food to increase height. She is probably nearing the end of her growth spurt at age 15. 62 inches is within normal range. ( BTW, I had a 63 inch daughter who was a star basketball player and has done just fine in life) ...Read more

Age 14 son had left wrist bone age xray. results state his bone age is 17 but do not state that growth plates are closed. any hope for further growth?
Yes: The major mechanical determinant of height is how long the longest bones in the body, like the femur (thigh) and tibia (leg), become. At the ends of these bones are the growth plates that appear like open spaces on x-rays when growth is ongoing but close when growth is completed. If the growth plate on your son is still open, there is potential for further growth. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
