Child Coughing Only During The Day
My child (4 years) has a fever every night for the last ten days. During the day he is quite active. He eats and drinks less and has a cough.
My 21-month-old child has a severe cough, mostly during night when she's asleep, sometimes difficulty breathing at the end. What could be the problem?
New or chronic: If this is a chronic problem, she could have asthma or reflux or a number of other respiratory conditions. If it is new and she is making a sharp inhaling sound after a cough bout she could have pertussis or a pertussis like illness. Has she been vaccinated? If her breathing difficulty is not a characteristic sharp inhale with a whoop, she may, again have cough variant asthma, bronchitis,or a viral respiratory illness that needs to run it’s course. Use cool humidified air for comfort, allow her to drink a warm juice with honey to help suppress the cough, smash some cough drops and let her suck on small pieces, and if she is not better in a few days bring her in to her doctor. ...Read more

If the child has reactive airway disease and gets ventoline as part of his treatment, then he should follow treatment plan outlined by his doctor for acute exacerbations of his symptoms. ...Read more

To appropriately treat a cough requires knowing what is causing the cough. Cough Meds: Cough and cold meds are not safe if you child is under 4 years old. So for that age group you are stuck with warm drinks, a sucking candy, and maybe honey. For the older child, there are many choices of over the counter cough and cold medicines that you can try but don't count on any real effect except that most kids get tired from the medicine, so i would only suggest taking it at night. ...Read more
