My daughter has chicken pox mainly on hear scalp. What can I use to relieve the itching?

Chicken Pox: Hello. You can give her diphenhydramine (generic for Benadryl) to help with the itching. It lasts for about 4 hours but may cause some drowsiness. Cetirizine (or Zyrtec) can also reduce itching, and it lasts 24 hours. You might also want to use a moisturizing conditioner when washing her hair/scalp to reduce itching from dryness. Hope she feels better soon! ...Read more

Red rash on 2 and a half years old. Rash is a little bumpy. Slight fever. No pain nor itching....Is it chicken pox?

Different stages: The rash in chicken pox is very itchy and is characterized by having different looking rashes on the skin at the same time. This represents the evolution of the rash over time. So if you look at a person with chicken pox you can see a lesion that is just a red bump next to a lesion that looks like a blister and you may see another lesion that looks like it is crusting over. This happens over days. ...Read more

My 1 year old developed a mild case of chicken pox from his varicella vaccination. What should I use for the itching?

Chicken Pox: Good for getting the vaccine- even if you get chicken pox, it is usually much milder! Making your child feel more comfortable is the main thing. Give tepid baths with baking soda or oatmeal powder to soothe itching. Prevent scratching when possible. Keep the skin clean, and cool. Tylenol (acetaminophen) for fever (NO aspirin) Call your doc if there is high fever. ...Read more

Just out of a cold. Severe whole body itching with skin bumps. I had chicken pox before. Fyi h1n1 is re-breaking into my area.

Post-infection rash: It is not at all unusual to develop urticarial (hives) following viral respiratory tract infections. Your body does lots of different things with its immune system even when you just have a "cold", and some of these immune responses trigger certain cells in your body to release histamine and cause the itching and rash. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) orally is your best friend here, to settle reaction. ...Read more

My son had some red bumps come up on his leg yesterday and they've gotten worse. There is a lot more and itching him now. He's never had Chicken Pox?

Unlikely to be Cpx: Cpx come up rapidly from tiny bump to BB sized blister within hours. They then drain and crust. It usually starts on the neck and spreads. Spots come up in waves for about 6 days. The ave # of spots is ~200. There a lot of things that can can cause bumps, bug bites and allergic exposures being high on the list. ...Read more

Go to your doctor: Without having her seen by a doctor, the cause of her spreading rash is uncertain. A clue to chicken pox is that lesions on the body are in different stages. For example, some lesions may be red bumps, while others may be pus bumps while others are starting to crust. If all her rash looks the same all over her body, unlikely chicken pox, but it's best to go to doctor as chickenpox is contagious. ...Read more

What is the best way to stop the itch of chicken pox?

What is the best way to stop the itch of chicken pox?

Chickenpox: There is no one thing that works but there are a few tricks. Warm showers may help. Oatmeal baths have some soothing properties. Calamine lotion can work but you wind up painting yourself pink! Systemic antihistamines can help but I would recommend the broad-spectrum, sedating ones as these tend to be more effective. If all else fails distraction techniques may work if you feel up to it. ...Read more

I am 33 yrd old. Why is my chicken pox not as itch as mentioned in most of the article about chickenpox?

Different people: Our bodies don't read textbooks; we know of the usual presentation for diseases, but it doesn't mean our bodies will exactly manifest every aspect. That being said, being 33 years old it is unlikely for you to have chickenpox unless you weren't exposed at all as a child; was this diagnosed by a doctor? ...Read more

I just noticed there are small red dots all over my body, can't be chicken pox, already had it, no itch, and just appeared, Is it an allergic reaction?

Possibly allergic: Chicken pox usually causes tiny blisters, initially just a few. Second cases of chicken pox are NOT unusual. The description of your lesions makes the disease unlikely. Other viral disease, particularly in summer are a possibility. Allergic reactions usually itch; a drug reaction would be another possibility. If the rash does not resolve within a few days, see your primary care physician. ...Read more

I'm a 14 year old girl, I found about 12 to 14 bumps on my body, they do not itch. I have already had the chicken pox twice, should I be worried about this?

I: I doubt it is chicken pox since your body was "immunized" by having a prior infection. There are numerous other possibilities and it is hard to tell without a picture, but perhaps they could be warts or molluscum contagiosum. Another possibility would be acne or folliculitis which is also common in your age group. I would recommend you get evaluated by a dermatologist if these bumps don't resolve very soon. ...Read more

My 1 year-old was diagnosed w chicken pox. Its been >1mth now n new rashes r growing. Y? Shudnt it resolve in 3 wks? Can antihistamine b given for itch?

I'm concerned.: There are three possibilities. (1) it's not chicken pox. (2) it's chicken pox but your child's immune system isn't working correctly due to a congenital immune defect. (3) it was chicken pox (aka varicella) but there is a secondary infection. The most severe of these are caused by the same streptococcus ("strep") that causes sore throats. See your doctor. ...Read more

Can I have chicken pox? How fast do they spread? My rash is red bumps that resemble small blisters ans they itch.

Can I have chicken pox? How fast do they spread? My rash is red bumps that resemble small blisters ans they itch.

Maybe, maybe not: Cpx is a contagious disease that can spread via droplet contact to anyone who is not immune to the disease. The incubation averages 2 wks & the rash starts out like small bumps that enlarge & fill with fluid before opening & crusting all in 1-2 days. Often starting around the neck/face, they can progress to involve any skin surface. Blisters continue to come out for 6-7d. ...Read more
