Doesn't matter: Whether a rib is broken or bruised is not a particularly meaningful distinction- both are quite painful and the pain lasts for weeks. An easy way to tell the difference, is to compress the chest wall (place hands away from the area of soreness). Be seen: If you are in severe pain, I would certainly be seen. It would seem that if you had simply "pulled a muscle" you would have known immediately when you did it. Muscle pains: If you experienced these pains after carrying a heavy backpack then it is reasonable to assume the pains may be a result of this. Try Tylenol to relieve the pain. Take a break from carrying heavy items. If the pains persist, then see a doctor.
