CT - when?: It's reassuring to know that your CT was normal but was it done for this illness (recently?). Your symptoms can be due to muscular pain, pleurisy or pericarditis. Muscular: With a negative CT scan, I think we can be assured that your pain is muscular or in the costochondral joints which attach your ribs to your sternum (and would not show up on CT). When you breathe, you're using intercostal muscles and flexing these joints. If you search diligently, you may be able to find trigger points by compressing different areas when they hurt. R/O PERICARDITIS: You may have inflammation of the heart=PERICARDITIS vs inflammation of the lungs =PLEURITIS. Myocarditis is much more serious and can be suggested by an abnormal echo. Often they are post viral. They tend to resolve with rest/hydration /NSAID (indocin) if it persists as course of prednisone may be needed. You need a prompt evaluation EKG/CXR AND LABS.
