Can't figure out these symptoms Non-exertional chest pain, cold hands, unilateral swollen interphalangeal thumb joint w/o trauma, dyspnea on awakening?
Think rheumatic dz: Definitely confusing! Nontraumatic IP joint swelling, especially in the thumb, brings to mind rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common complication of RA is costochondritis which affects the rib joints (chest pain) & a variant called Caplan's Syndrome leads to lung nodules. Other autoimmune diseases may mimic RA (lupus?) but testing by a Rheumatologist may sort things out for u. Good Luck! Thanx 4 ur Q ...Read more

I often get a brief bout of stomach cramps & cold hands after an ectopic beat. No other heart symptoms or chest pain. Can ectopic beats cause this?
Doubtful: 1/2 of ectopy is not felt, 1/2 of palpitations are not associated with skipped beats. Feeling an ectopic beat at 1 moment doesn't mean there was 1 at that moment. The sensation of a skipped beat, regardless if it actually occurred or not, is for everyone, anxiety provoking. Therefore a brief spell of anxiety is likely the cause of your other symptoms. A cardiologist can evaluate your concerns ...Read more

Too many areas: Nerves supply specific areas. There's no nerve that supplies both your hands, chest and lungs. I think the pinched nerve hypothesis doesn't explain your symptoms. Instead, perhaps you should be fully evaluated. A chest x-ray, ekg, blood work and other tests as needed would provide a lot of information. ...Read more

My girlfriend has pain from her shoulder down to her left hand, no numbness, no chest pain she is 53. What can it be?
Could be cardiac: It could be many things, among them is angina from her heart. The crux of the decision to present emergently for chest pain should be based off the pre-test probability of how likely it is that her discomfort is from her heart. It depends on her risk factors really. It's less to be cardiac but is still possibly. Musculoskeletal is other possibility, or pinched nerve. ...Read more

Fever?: Your cool hand and leg and dizziness worry me for low blood pressure. Your chest pain and difficulty breathing at your age (21) concerns me for pneumonia (infection), pleurisy (infection), pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or pulmonary embolism (blood clot). I had a nasty chest pain earlier, it went away but now I have a weird tingling sensation in my left arm and hand. Any thoughts what it is?
First time symptoms?: Are these the first symptoms you've ever had of this problem? I recommend you see your primary doc. Young people can have valvular/other cardiac problems like older people. It's relatively rare but birth defects can be present and never detected until later simply because there are no symptoms. And especially if you're into exertional sports in school etc. Call your doctor for an appointment soon ...Read more
