Could be a fracture: Suzy, the answer won't be clear without an x-ray. Your symptoms are consistent with both a bruise and possibly a rib fracture. Pain can be quite severe with a cough or deep inspiration if it is a fracture as the ribs will move considerably with deep breaths.
