The Heinous Hiatus: Yeah, maybe. You might have had a small one before pregnancy that got worse and now you are feeling the consequences. Maybe: Gerd can cause many symptoms. Shortness of breath can occur if reflux enters the airway. This can be evaluated with a ph probe. Maybe: You have an atypical symptom for gerd, which means it has a 60-70% chance at best of being related to gerd. A 48 hour ph study can help correlate acid reflux events to your symptom. This should be done off antacid mess for a week. A 24hour ph impedance study could be done on meds as well. Your GI doctor can help with these if its bad enough. Best of luck. ...Read more

Hi I'm getting a hernia operation on friday and just want to know if they can still do operation as I have a small cold & chest injection?
Everytime I eat I get upper chest pain. I do have a small hernia...Is that causing the chest pain.
Unlikely: Large hiatal hernias would be likely to cause this. These are also known as paraesophageal hernias. Small hiatal hernias are usually not of much consequence, but could get larger over the years. Also, spasm of the esophagus could cause the pain. This is diagnosed with manometry where a small tube goes through the nose and into the stomach. ...Read more
Had nissen done over 10 yrs ago. It has loosened and slipped into chest cavity. Can it be taken down and reversed and can hernia just be fixed.?
Re-do Nissen: Revision fundoplication is more involved than the primary operation. The reason for revision needs to be identified. Recurrent reflux and difficulty swallowing are common reasons. Preop testing should include endoscopy, barium swallow, and possibly ph probe, manometry and gastric emptying studies. I do not recommend simply reversing as it will result in severe reflux symptoms in most cases. ...Read more

Not related: You have a hiatal hernia. You have a tortuous aorta. The two are not related. The aorta has turns in it that are being commented or described by the radiologist. Diagnosed with small sliding hiatus hernia no heartburns but sharp chest pain which radiates to back sometimes. Is this condition serious? Ty
Hiatal hernias: If small, no. Could have resultant reflux pain, which stems from stomach acid going back up the esophagus. You are at risk for this because of the hiatal hernia, & usually is present after eating something spicy, fatty or really heavy. Avoid foods like above as well as smoking, alcohol & medications like Aleve/Advil/Motrin. See a GI specialist or Surgeon for possible repair, if the pain continues. ...Read more
