Both: A cold is an upper respiratory infection. Acute bronchitis is also an upper respiratory infection. I would say you have both: acute bronchitis caused by a cold. I'm having a dry cough, and runny nose and it feels like my chest is congested. Is this a common cold? Will OTC medicine work?
Common Cold: If your dry cough persists for a while (4-6 weeks) this could be secondary to inflammation in your upper airway or lungs subsequent to the common cold viruses or post nasal drip syndrome, in both these cases a short course of inhaled broncho dilators like albuterol might be useful (this is not OTC). Try steam inhalation, it provides symptomatic relief. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Baby nose: As babies face and head grow early in life, the nasal passages can actually narrow out a little bit. Since the nasal passages are so very narrow to start with in infants, a little bit of additional narrowing can lead to a lot of noise. He (or she) will outgrow this as face fills out in the second half of the first year. Nothing to worry about as long s no other symptoms and eating fine! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I don't have a runny nose or cough but I can feel a lot of congestion in my chest and its difficult to breathe sometimes. What should I do?
That depends...: Depends on how long the symptoms have been going on and whether there are associated symptoms such as swelling in the ankles, wheeze, fever, worsened breathing when lying flat and a number of other questions and physical exam data points. Try mucinex (guaifenesin) to loosen any phlegm. If symptoms are long-standing, an exam by a physician at a minimum. ...Read more

Viral or seasonal: allergies can cause all of the above symptoms. You may continue on until your sinuses plug up and get infected. Not usually: Most allergy-related symptoms are sneezing, dry cough, watery eyes, itchy eyes or throat. If you have an asthma component to your allergies, you can get wheezy or be short of breath. A nasal steroid can be very helpful in treatment and prevention of symptoms since it works right where your body reacts to the antigen. Non-sedating anti-histamines are helpful if steroid spray alone won't do it! ...Read more
