Son possiably having seizures after a fall. My son is 13 years old and fell from his bike and he was wearing a helmet. He was brusied up pretty good on the chest and hips. He said he did not hit his head or lose conciusness but his little sister said he "
Everyone should wear a helmet when riding a bike to reduce the severity of injury to the brain when crashes happen. After a crash, the helmet should be discarded (many manufacturers have a return and replacement program) and disabled (such as by cutting the straps) so that it can not be reused. Helmets lose their shock-absorbing properties during a crash.
People who hit their heads are not good sources of information about their injury, or about associated symptoms such as loss of consciousness -- witnesses are better. Being dazed or knocked out briefly is a sign of concussion, which is a brain injury. After a concussion, people often experience a syndrome that may include irritability, sleep disturbance, poor concentration, and headaches. This syndrome usually resolves after several months.
It is true that brain injuries can cause seizures, but often a brain injury begins a period of heightened surveillance which detects longstanding conditions that have been hiding "under the surface." these conditions could include epilepsy.
Absence seizures (or absence epilepsy) is a very specific type of epilepsy that most experts agree is a primary generalized epilepsy. ("absence" in this case is pronounced with a french accent, sort of like "ab-sahnz".) in other words, absence epilepsy is genetic, not acquired from head injuries or any other brain insult.
Diagnosing conditions like absence epilepsy requires a high degree of expertise. The diagnosis is very specific, and shouldn't be a conclusion that is reached before consultation and testing by a pediatric neurologist or epileptologist. [i am going to move this discussion from "neurophysiology" to "pediatric neurology".]. ...Read more
