How long?: If these have been present for months or years, you likely have an allergic condition. If they have been present for less than a week, it is likely from a cold. How long?: If it is a chronic problem , there are many potential causes but hay fever being the most common. Sometimes the nose may start running after reduction of the nasal congestion. See below: You have a cold. I recommend an over the counter decongestant either phenylephrine nose drops or spray or pseudephedrine tablets (the ones locked up behind the counter). Use them for only 3-4 days to avoid rebound phenomenon. You could also take tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain relief and throat lozenges if sore throat. Take Robitussin-DM for cough.
