Can't Tell: Why don't you have him evaluated if you think there is significant trauma to the head? How old is he? Did you see the injury? Could the eye have been struck? Any change in mental status? Woke up and out of no where there is a huge red spot in the white of my eye. No pain and can see normal. Is concern needed?
Probably not.: This sounds like a sub conjunctival hemorrhage, a broken blood vessel underneath the thin transparent membrane over the white of the eye. It will not cause any permanent problem and will go away by itself in 2-3 weeks. Timing?: Depends on the cause of the red spot. If it is a bruise (subconjunctival hemorrhage), it may take about 2 weeks to go away. These are generally benign and self limited, and often a result of minor trauma, such as rubbing your eyes.
