The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Yes: If a 2b lesion has been completely resected with a lobectomy and there is no problem 6 months post surgery the best approach is for careful follow up. Started withpost nasal drip & cough. Thursday, exhausted, temp 100 dizzy cough . Sunday diagnosis bronchitis. Today diagnosis pneumonia. On antibiotics. How serious?
Difficult to say: Difficult to answer specifically, so you should talk with your doctor. In general the "seriousness" of pneumonia can be judged by several factors. The risk posed by pneumonia is increased with age > 65, a fast rep rate or low blood pressure, confusion or delirium, and certain abnormal blood tests indicating problems with kidney function. Coexisting serious illness also increases risk. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

GB cancer is: Uncommon, so few studies done prospectively. Looking at results in people treated empirically, perhaps one person in 10 will respond. That needs to be balanced against side effects that tend to occur in most. Frank discussion about symptom rrelief focus rather than "shrink tumor" at all cost. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Lung Cancer Concern - 33 pk yr smoker. Short of breath, wheezing, sweats, non-stop coughing & phlegm especially in morning. Low dose CT? 47 Y/O.
This is very serious: You need to do whatever it takes to stop smoking now. Otherwise this is your whole future. I doubt you have lung cancer, or that screening saves many lives, but nowadays who gets screened with low-dose CT is politics and you should accept if offered. You may have an acute infection, even pertussis. An antitrypsin level may be in order though with any result smoking cessation is imperative. ...Read more

Hospice care will ensure that pain and suffering will be avoided and will not prolong death. I assume that the patient and family understands and agrees with this plan of care. ...Read more
My father had hodgkins chemo killed original cancer but whilst having chemo non hodgkin's grew chemo didnt work now spread brain lung how much time?
Be prepared: Advancing lymphoma that is not responsive to treatment usually means a relatively short life span remains, so it is best to prepare and enjoy the present with your loved one. Occasionally, clinical trials of newer drugs may be available for people who have failed conventional treatments, but these are "last ditch" attempts and may not increase survival much, but do help us to learn for future pts. ...Read more
Stage 4 nsclc adenocarcinoma metatasized 10 months now coughing and spitting up blood, requiring immediate blood transfusion. Why?
Natural course of dz: I am very concerned with the symptoms. That indicates perhaps now the disease has progressed more-especially with presence of significant anemia. There is a possibility that now the cancer has gone to the bone marrow and supress normal blood production. The cancer in the lung may have gotten bigger that's explaining presence of cough/spitting blood. Need treatment ( chemo and radiation th) d/w md. ...Read more

Started w/ cold symptoms w/ very dry cough. In last 2 days, deteriorated to deep/painful cough + nasal/ear congestion. Antibiotics? Bronchitis? Flu?
Viral URI: This sounds like a viral upper respiratory infection, which is common at this time of year. Decongestants (eg, pseudoephedrine) and Ibuprofen are common home remedies. Antibiotics not usually helpful (and may be harmful) . A tincture of time is usually therapeutic. See your doctor if cough becomes productive or bloody, if fever returns above 101, if ear congestion turns to pain. ...Read more
