Chemical Smell In Stool
My daughter has sand coloured loose stools, which smell almost chemical as does her wind. She is very hot and had a sick bug 4 days ago, any advice?
Not sure what you: Mean by "a sick bug, " but if you mean she was vomiting, then it sounds like she might have a gastrointestinal virus ("stomach bug"). If she has fever, she can have acetaminophen. For the stools, try to give her a more binding diet, stay off dairy and lots of fluids. Have her seen by her doctor if she is not eating/drinking or not getting better. ...Read more

Why do stools be in dark color? My stools are ocassionally dark but not black. No foul smell. Why?
Bilirubin: In bile, the breakdown product of the hemoglobin in red blood cells, is generally responsible for stool color. Blood in the stool from upper GI bleeding is usually black; if you have any questions don't hesitate to talk with your doctor about them:) ...Read more

What does it mean to have stool that looks like powder is very loose and smells bad? I've been experiencing this for months now....
Hard to visualize?: To describe your stool as looking like powder and being loose is a little confusing...looseness often suggests watery. Perhaps you mean the powder isn't sticking together! My general thought is that your stool is too dry...you are not drinking enough fluids, especially water, or stool is passing very quickly through your intestine so it doesn't absorb. Try increasing water (a lot!). Then, to Doc:) ...Read more

Fever? Appetite?: Hi Amanda179. Stool texture and smell usually have to do with diet changes. One-year old children are starting to expand their diets and this changes their intestinal flora. Think if the child has eaten any new foods in the last few days. That said, fever, low energy, and low appetite can be a sign of something more serious, as can blood or pus in the stool. ...Read more

It's possible, but: Not necessarily the case. The color of the stool depends on several factors, but most importantly, the time it takes for food/substances ingested to move through the intestinal tract. (which changed the amount of bile excreted into the intestines and then reabsorbed); the faster substances move through, the greener the stools. Some stools that are bright green are from infections. ...Read more
