What is it and is there any solution for charcot marie tooth disease?

What is it and is there any solution for charcot marie tooth disease?

Mostly Symptomatic: Its a hereditary motor sensory neuropathy. Unfortunately, there is no cure for CMT disease. There are at least 5 different types. How the kid does clinically depends also on its type. Treating pain with medications, orthopedic braces, occupational and physical therapy etc are the main stay of treatment. I assume that the diagnosis is already made, with the help of a geneticist, neurologist etc. ...Read more

What parent is charcot marie tooth disease inheritable from?

What parent is charcot marie tooth disease inheritable from?

Either Parent!: Cmt is caused by defects in the genes for proteins that affect axons. Cmt can be inherited in several ways:autosomal dominant (faulty gene contributed by either parent);autosomal recessive (faulty gene contributed by each parent);or x-linked (gene on the x chromosome contributed by either parent.) in other words, unlike color-blindness, which is a sex-linked trait, CMT seems to come from either. ...Read more

Which parent is charcot marie tooth disease inherited from? Is it possible to tell?

Which parent is charcot marie tooth disease inherited from? Is it possible to tell?

Depends: 1 of the 5 primary types (5 of the 34 subtypes) are x-linked dominant meaning it comes from the x-chromosome (mom) but the vast majority are autosomal recessive or dominant meaning from either parent or both parents (if recessive although this is much rarer than dominant). You could tell by doing a genetic test on both the parents and/or evaluating the pedigree (family history) of both parents. ...Read more

Can charcot marie tooth disease be diagnosed by having all criteria but normal nerve conduction studies?

Can charcot marie tooth disease be diagnosed by having all criteria but normal nerve conduction studies?

Subtypes: There are many subtypes of charcot-marie tooth disease, which appear differently on emg/nerve conduction studies. It would be unlikely to have CMT with completely normal studies. Genetic testing for CMT would give you a definative diagnosis and identify the subtype. A nerve biopsy is an alternate method of diagnosis, but has potential risk. ...Read more
