I have very chapped lips and they busted open overnight, looked like a cut. I am herpes1 positive. How do I know if its a cold sore or just a cut?

How do I know when my cold sore is gone? I get swollen lower lip, no blister or sore. Swab tested HSV1 +ve. Mostly healed, very dry and chapped lips

Also called cheilitis is a common, treatable and preventable condition. Stay hydrated, apply lubricant, do not lick your lips and use your nose for breathing. No other treatment is necessary.

Try this...: Take a topical antiviral ointment like zovirax, denavir, (penciclovir) or viractin and use it in combination with a lip balm or petroleum coating. You could even use abreva. These ointments have petroleum bases which will help lubricate your cracked lips and provide antiviral protection. Forget it: No home remedies work for this. None of the creams are worth the money. Prescription pills are very effective but only if taken at the prodrome. Best is valacyclovir 2 grams at once when the first tingling warns of an impending attack. May still help if taken at first appearance of the sore. Herpes: Herpes infections are what cause cold sores. Typically HSV Type 1. Very common, majority of population has been exposed to this virus. However, it's possible that the virus is being activated (the symptoms you describe) but not to the point of actually causing a break in the skin.
