Chancroid is rare...: Chancroid is somewhat rare in the USA. In fact, most STD treatment centers do not have the lab capability to diagnose it. Almost all painful genital ulcers are herpes. But...the criteria for suspician of chancroid are 1) One or more painful genital ulcers 2) No laboratory evidence of syphilis 3) Tests for herpes are negative 3) the clinical presentation is typical for Chancroid. Genital herpes?: Chancroid is extremely rare, with NO reported cases in the US in recent years. And people don't carry chancroid for 5 months. Probably you were misdiagnosed. The main condition that mimics chancroid is gential herpes, but syphilis also is possible. Return for reevaluation, or find another doctor familiar with STDs. Many differences: The syphilitic ulcer has a hard base which is non-tender, has a well-defined edge and will, with time, disappear on its own. The chancroid ulcer has a soft base, is quite tender and may look inflamed, and has ragged shaggy edges.
