Hiv (Definition)

Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more

What kind of HIV test has a good accuracy for one month since last encounter?

What kind of HIV test has a good accuracy for one month since last encounter?

Blood or swab: You can have a blood test or the swab test, they are both accurate. Typically most physicians will tell you if you're unsure of your exposure to get tested as far as 6 months post exposure to confirm you haven't been exposed to the virus.

Hi, Had unprotected sex first encounter didn't even last 5 minutes, chances of hiv?

Hi, Had unprotected sex first encounter didn't even last 5 minutes, chances of hiv?

Low: Though your chance of infection with HIV after one unprotected sexual encounter is low, it is not impossible. It would be wise to be checked and to avoid unprotected sex in the future. Risk of infection increases if your partner is diagnosed with HIV, if you engaged in anal sex and if any bleeding occurred during sex. Any unprotected sex increases risk regardless of how long the encounter lasts.

I had an unprotected sexual encounter in thailand 22 days ago. I started on pep 10 hours after the incident. When can I get tested for hiv?

PeP and Testing: Good for you for starting on PeP. We now also know that PreP works even more effectively. You cannot be tested accurately during the time you are on PeP. But, I will always send an HIV RNA test two weeks after PeP ends. This test would be extremely accurate and not need any further testing afterwards. But, if you have ongoing risk you should get tested every three months routinely & consider PreP

HIV Testing: The most accurate HIV test one month after possible exposure is the HIV RNA pcr test. This measures the virus and not the antibody response. It is thought to be 100% accurate from 21 days post exposure.

Chances of 12 weeks negative 4th Gen combo and PCR RNA turning positive for HIV after an unprotected encounter with a female of unknown status? Thanks

Less than 1%: Multiple reports cite that the sensitivity (ability to accurately measure a truly negative test) of the 4th generation IV test is 100%. Examples given include 1 false negative/508 specimens, another 2 false negatives/669 tests. You are negative for HIV.

What are the chances I have hiv? I am going crazy over this. First of all, this will sound insane. Recently I "fingered" a girl that I don't know well, and the finger I used, had a 5 day old paper cut. About 3 days after the encounter I developed flu sym

Not HIV: Congratulations on your adventure. Anytime another person allows even some simple loving, you should be pleased and feel that life's good. I'm sorry this led to your being frightened. Paper cuts are sealed securely with fibrin and you won't get infected through them. And the onset time for HIV isn't so fast.

What is the chance of contracting the HIV virus from a dentist's visit?

What is the chance of contracting the HIV virus from a dentist's visit?

Close to zero!: A dentist's office is probably one of the safest places you can go to. The only thing that comes to mind that might be even safer is a hospital operating room or surgicenter. If you like worrying, what about a restaurant or escalator or door handles to stores, etc. Anyway, the answer is practically zero. Trust your dentist and the sterility of his office and procedures or find another dentist.

How can a person take a home HIV test or visit a physician and get results without the results being sprung on you out of nowhere?

How can a person take a home HIV test or visit a physician and get results without the results being sprung on you out of nowhere?

That's easy: One can go to her doctor and ask for an HIV test. She schedules a return visit to the doctor for 2 weeks later. The lab does the test. The patient does not open any email from the lab or the doctor, and also does not open any postal mail from the doctor or the lab. She waits until her return visit to get her result from the doctor. It's really that easy.

Is two months after the last encounter a good amount of time if person tested negative for HIV?

Is two months after the last encounter a good amount of time if person tested negative for HIV?

Depends on test: If the test was HIV nucleic acid test, that is good, though even that should be repeated in about 2 months. Antibody tests being negative is not nearly as good and should be redone every couple of months for a year. Please note that post-exposure treatment is generally effective and, God forbid you are in a similar predicament again, seek care as soon as possible, after exposure.

Do I have to take more tests for hiv if I tested and the person I had encounters with tested negative as well? Can I take the results as conclusive

Do I have to take more tests for hiv if I tested and the person I had encounters with tested negative as well? Can I take the results as conclusive

Probably yes: If your partner is negative for HIV, it is exceedingly unlikely s/he is infected. But even if exposed to a known infected person, a negative HIV antigen-antibody blood test (i.e. 4th generation test) is usually conclusive by 4 weeks and always conclusive 6 weeks or more after the last exposure.

Tcells get infected: HIV attacks the very cells that are supposed to defend you against it.

If I test negative for HIV after 6 weeks and 12 weeks after last encounter, should I stop worrying?

If I test negative for HIV after 6 weeks and 12 weeks after last encounter, should I stop worrying?

Love wisely: I see that you're 18, and I'm very pleased you're asking. It shows you plan to love carefully and wisely until you're in a permanent, monogamous relationship. Consider yourself HIV-negative, be thankful for good health, and use barrier protection from now on until you're ready to be a father. Best wishes.
