What can I do to fight hayfever symptoms? I'm currently on 120mg Cetirizine Hydrochloride but they are only relieving symptoms for 1-2 hours
Nasal steroids: Are your symptoms present in fall, spring seasons, or year round? If year round, they may be nonallergic rather than allergic. If present during the fall and spring hayfever seasons, you may benefit from topical nasal steroid therapy. Sound scary? It has been found to be the most effective treatment with few side effects. Do discuss your therapy options with your primary medical provider. ...Read more

Check with doc: Cetirizine is good as an allergy medicine for control over a period of time. It's not meant as an acute treatment. If your child suddenly has cough, you should have him examined to make sure the issue is viral vs. Asthma or other etiology. A 2 year old can take cetirizine, but it's off-label, and should be guided by a physician. ...Read more

In treating allergy, my GP prescribed cetirizine hydrochloride 10mg and dexamethasone micronized 0.5 mg but I gained weight. Is it normal?
Yes: Dexamethasone is a steroid which can cause many serious side effects aside from weight gain (especially at the belly) and should not be used chronically for allergic diseases even though it can be highly effective. My 5 yr old has croup she gets is it 4/5 times per yr. She's been prescribed atrovent (ipratropium) and cetirizine hydrochloride. Don't seem to work! Please advise!
May not be croup: Croup would be somewhat unusual at this age (usually up to 3 years old). I wonder if there is some other airway problem. Croup is caused by a virus so there is no medication to prevent it. I would recommend seeing an ENT doctor to find out if there is something else causing these symptoms. ...Read more
