I had 3 cervical facet joint injection yesterday. Is it normal for my neck to have extreme pain and stiffness? What to do for the pain?

Some is normal

Extreme pain and stiffnes is unusual. Should be evaluated for menigitis, especially if you have a fever. Ice for about 45 minutes 3-4 times per day, will address inflammation and swelling, never apply ice to the skin, always over a towel or clothing. Pain can be relieved with over-the-counter medications like Advil or Aleve. Follow directions on label.

What does the cervical facet joints do in your neck? What kind of injection does a doctor give for radiculopathy? Please help and explain

Cervical facets

Open-uri20140412-30279-sf99vu
The 2 facet joints are 2 of the 3 moving parts of each level of the spine. The disc is the 3rd. These joints protect the spine and spinal cord from abnormal motion or translation. If the facet joint were to fracture or "break", it could lead to damage of the nerves/spinal cord. Facet injections are done to help with inflammation in the joint by injecting steroid in the same way you have knee shot

Hit in neck 7wks ago MRI-chronic cervical spondylosis c56c67 degenerative bony narrowings left sided associated mild left facet arthropathy. Worried?

Common findings

Mri
The MRI seems to describe very common degenerative type changes at typical locations in the neck. They are described as chronic, which indicates these are due to wear and tear over time and not likely related to your being hit in the neck. These changes will likely continue to happen over the course of a lifetime and may be a source of pain in your neck and/or arms from time to time.

Can you tell me what is a cervical facet joint?

Neck joints

Joints
Most people think of their spine as the vertebrae and discs, but those are the structures in the front. The spinal cord sits in the middle, and is protected by additional bony structures in the back. Where the back bones meet the front bones, there are joints on either side of the midline called facet joints. These joints are tiny, typically capable of holding less than less than 1cc of fluid.

Dr. Geoffrey Ndeto answered:

Could a cervical facet nerve block take pain away forever?

Potentially yes.

Pain
Facet block is by and large a diagnostic tool but can be therapeutic as well. Commonly however the pain is rarely gone forever and will come back. If however facet pain is established as a diagnosis( this being the prime reason for the block in the first place), treatment options do exist that allow for long periods( months) of good pain relief to be experienced.

Dr. Ki-Hon Lin answered:

How do you distinguish between Occipital neuralgia and cervical facet syndrome?

Neck pain

Cervical
Occipital neuralgia typically causes headache, starting at the base of the back of the skull and radiating into the back of the head, behind the ears. Cervical facet syndrome, on the other hand, typically cases pain right in the neck itself, either on one side or both sides, depending on which facets are involved. Imaging studies and diagnostic spinal injections can help differentiate
