How long do I need to be taking benzodiazepines to cure my social anxiety for?

How long do I need to be taking benzodiazepines to cure my social anxiety for?

Benzos aren't a cure: I agree with dr. Ali. Benzodiazapines numb you to your anxiety but they don't address the underlying cause. They can also be very addicting. A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor would be a class of medication that could help with the underlying neurochemical problems but psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy would actually start to give you control. How long does Paxil (paroxetine) take to have a therapeutic effect? Why does it not work instantaneously, like benzodiazepines?

What is safer for long term use and short term for all types of anxiety, benzodiazepines, paxil, zoloft, lexapro, buspar, (buspirone) or marijuana(used correctly)?

Not benzo's.: Hello - long term use of benzodiazapines can lead to tolerance. Marijuana can cause marked psychiatric problems in some people including anxiety, psychosis & paranoia. Paxil can be used long -term but most of my patients have experienced more side effects with it then from Lexapro & zoloft. I see you are on Lexapro -it has an excellent side effect profile. Buspar (buspirone) is very safe for long-term use. ...Read more
