Can stopping celexa during early pregnancy cause a misscarriage ? I'm currently tapering off celexa and it's giving me "brain zaps" is this harmful?
Complicated answer: You ask a question that only your treating physicians can answer for you, specifically. Depending on why you were on the celexa, tapering could actually cause harm to you and the baby after you are off the medications. Yes: At this dose the chances of anything bad happening to baby are about 1 in 2000 for pulmonary hypertension. The best studied antidepressants in pregnancy are Prozac and sertraline (zoloft). Possibly safe: Citalopram, as well as the other ssris, are class c medications in pregnancy. That is, there is no proven harm to the fetus. However, one of the cautions with this medication is that one should avoid abrupt withdrawal.
