Can stopping celexa (citalopram) during early pregnancy cause a misscarriage ? I'm currently tapering off celexa (citalopram) and it's giving me "brain zaps" is this harmful?

Complicated answer: You ask a question that only your treating physicians can answer for you, specifically. Depending on why you were on the celexa (citalopram), (citalopram) tapering could actually cause harm to you and the baby after you are off the medications. In my practice, I have not had any patients have that particular experience when tapering off celexa (citalopram). Please discuss these questions in detail with your OB and your psychiatrist. ...Read more

Pregnancy (Definition)

Bottom line, there is minimal risk to baby and there is risk to mom for untreated depression in pregnancy. It's an important decision to make with your doctor, knowing the risks and benefits. Possibly safe: Citalopram, as well as the other ssris, are class c medications in pregnancy. That is, there is no proven harm to the fetus. However, one of the cautions with this medication is that one should avoid abrupt withdrawal. When you deliver your baby, it will no longer have this medication in its system and will therefore withdraw from it. I recommend you talk to your pediatrician. ...Read more
