Talk to doc but: First you need to take the Pantoprazole 30-60 mins before your first meal of the day. There is also concern that chronic use of this type of drug increases the risk in getting pneumonia and possibly traveler's diarrhea. If taken only when heartburn starts, then a Histamine 2 reverse agonist (Pepcid, Zantac) may be more appropriate. ...Read more

Omeprazole: I'd suggest you try Omeprazole otc (generic and cheaper than copay in many instances) for 7 days. If the pain resolves it is almost certainly gerd. If less than 75% improvement you should see your primary care provider and discuss. ...Read more

Yes: On diet, want to ensure cutting back drastically on caffeine, coffee, alcohol, fatty/fried foods, too much acidic or spicy foods (some good), red meats. Lose weight. Keep blood pressure and diabetes (if applicable) in control. Exercise daily. Stay sitting or standing at least 30 min after any meal. Sleep on a regular schedule. Control stress. These all help with GERD unless hiatal hernia present. ...Read more

Probably: Sounds like gerd which can be intermittent. No one way to make the diagnosis, but if you feel better on a ppi then that usually is enough to make the diagnosis. Diagnosis of gerd can also be made with an endoscopy but not necessary. ...Read more
