Is this antibiotic gv Cefuroxime cv likley to raise sugar levels. Just wanna make sure as my father is put on them for a week twice a day.Help?
Cefuroxime...: ...won't affect blood sugar. We use it (and related drugs, i.e. the cephalosporin antibiotics) all the time in diabetic patients, including two of my own patients currently in the hospital. Reduce effectiveness: Ranitidine has been show to reduce the Cefuroxime levels when taken together.This may result in antibiotic failure. If you must use ranitidine, take Cefuroxime at least 2 hours before your ranitidine dose.Peak level of Cefuroxime ~2 hours after an oral dose allow 8-12hr before next dose(ranitidine out of body) some side effects diarrhea, heartburn. Yes: I have been using Ceftin (cefuroxime axetil) in penicillin allergic patients for years without any problem. You can safely take ceftin. Other antibiotics that can be used are the fluoroquinolones such as Ciprofloxacin or levaquin (levofloxacin). The latter is more expensive but has a very low rate of bacterial resistance. ...Read more
