More information: Well the question is 'what' are you taking the antibiotic for? The doctor who prescribed the medication should have some kind of 'plan' in mind for you... We like to follow the axiom - 'treat until better' which for some people means a week, others 10 days, or possibly much longer. It's important to be monitored for side effects AND to make sure a good result is achieved. So please check with doc ...Read more
Probably yes, but: Cefuroxime has very little similarity with penicillin. Still, some patients who are highly sensitive to penicillin don't tolerate it. If you had a life-threatening reaction to penicillin, don't take it without consulting an allergist/immunologist first. If yo had a mild rash or nausea, you can probably try it. ...Read more
Maybe: You have about a 2-5% chance to also be allergic to cefuroxime. You may want to talk to your allergist about testing to penicillin first to confirm this allergy. If you do have pcn allergy, then you can: 1.Use a different antibiotic 2. Do a graded challenge/desensitization to cefuroxime. If negative to pcn on testing, <1% will have problems with cefuroxime. ...Read more

I am allergic to penicillin and I have been prescribed 250 mg of cefuroxime axetil can I take it?
Possibly: Approximately 16% of individuals with true penicillin allergies will have a cross reactivity with cephalosporin antibiotics, like Cefuroxime axetil. Best to discuss with your prescribing doctor whether or not he or she believes you have a true allergy to penicillin vs. A side effect reaction to penicillin. ...Read more

Not first choice: This is an antibiotic, but not my first choice in treating oral infections. I usually start with Amoxicillin and when someone is allergic to that go to clindamycin. This antibiotic may help but some but will not cure a tooth infection. One must eliminate the source of infection to cure and that means trying to get to a dentist for proper diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

Not necessarily: Cefuroxime will inhibit sensitive strains of gonococci, but not touch chlamydia, trichomonas, hiv, and although somewhat effective against syphilis, depending upon the stage of the disease it may not be a good choice. You should be tested for other causes beyond the illness for which it was prescribed, and be careful. I cannot think of a sexual experience worth dying for. ...Read more
I took only one 500 mg tablet of cefuroxime axetil, before I read that it can make my birth control pill less effective. What should I do? : (can it?
Cefuroxime: Despite the longstanding belief that antibiotics interact with birth control pills, several studies have shown that few if any antibiotics increase the risk of pregnancy in women taking birth control pills. There are failures of birth control pills in women both off and on antibiotics without major differences. Would suggest this is not a substantial risk. ...Read more
Taking cefuroxime axetil for sinusitis for 6 days, still green/yellow productive cough and wheeze. Go back to Dr or wait till finish all 10 days?
It can be: Cefuroxime is a 2nd generation cephalosporin, and can be used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. If a urine culture was obtained showing 'sensitivity' to cefuroxime, then it is a good choice. It is frequently used for respiratory infections, and can be used for uti's as well, but I would like to see a culture result to be sure it is adequate. ...Read more
I was given cefuroxime axetil for a sinus infection starting yesterday. I woke up with major head/toothache. Can I take tylenol. I woke up a couple of hours ago with the pain and decided to go back to bed to see if it would go away. It did not.
No: But that is a poor choice for acne. You fail to indicate which birth control. Some birth control makes acne worse, some make it better. 30 years ago it was a reasonable question to ask if an antibiotic might inhibit absorption of birth control hormone. Studies were done showing no effect except for rifampin. A much better treatment for you is antiandrogen SPIRONOLACTONE usually 100mg a day. Or min ...Read more
Pain in calf muscle of right leg. Difficulty walking. Doc here gave cefuroxime axetil and paracetamol-serratiopetidase-aceclotenac tablets.
That depends....: Ceftin (cefuroxime axetil) is a 2nd generation cephalosporin antibiotic (there are 4 generations now). It is commonly given for infections across the lungs, sinuses, gut, and skin. Mild or major, depends on perspective but overall I would say that antibiotics are over-prescribed. The key at this point is to finish the course you were given. ...Read more
Is there a drug interaction for Ceftin (cefuroxime) and Omeprazole? I am on ceftin (cefuroxime) 2x daily and Omeprazole 40mg daily. Can they be taken together?
Med interactions: According to a drug interaction check, the absorption level of the Ceftin (cefuroxime) may be affected by lowered stomach acid which is what omeprazole does. It appears that any medication that lowers the acid would have this affect (for example, Zantac or Pepcid). This would reduce the effectiveness of the Ceftin (cefuroxime). You may want to discuss this with the doctor who prescribed the Ceftin (cefuroxime) or your pharmacist. ...Read more
